The versatility of beautiful heart tattoos

There are certain images that are immensely popular with body art fans and while some appeal more to men than women, the latter certainly seem to have precedence when it comes to pretty and symbolic heart tattoos. These are perfect for almost any placement area whether you want a tiny red heart inked on a small surface like the wrist, hand or toes or a small, medium or large one scaled to fit a larger area, perhaps adorned with additional images such as flowers, ribbons, a name or even numerals. This is a very versatile image that works well on its own or incorporated into more elaborate imagery and while it is most often favored in red or deep pink ink, these look good in dark monochrome ink designs too.

Cook was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 6 after suffering a left knee laceration when he was spiked covering home plate.

You Are Both Crazy! | Fostercare World

My husband and I are of the boomer generation and raised our families. We met in 1998 and fell in love. My husband almost didn?t date me because I still had a son at home. He was done raising children and wanted a woman with no complications. But I was too cute and charming for him to resist.

Things were great for a while but when my son entered his teens; we were headed for a rough road., When my son was grown and on his own, I approached my husband with the subject of foster care. He thought I was crazy and said, ?No Way!??Wouldn?t?even consider it with all the drama we had survived. I must have planted a seed because we would periodically discuss the idea. He finally said he would consider it. I was thrilled. Foster care had been my heart?s desire for many years, but it just never was the right time. I began setting up the details to start training. We were ready to commit. Well, I was, found out later my husband was?humouring?me. He would appear to try but then would figure out a way to get out of it while still looking like the good guy. He?didn?t?want to disappoint me, but?didn?t?want more kids to deal with.

I think everything is moving along fine, until we got back his test results from a check-up. The prostrate cancer was back. Five years earlier, he had undergone intensive radiation; he would have to do it again. This time seed implants. The foster care process came to a screeching halt. I was sad, but knew that my husband needed to focus on his health, to have a peaceful environment if he was going to fight this.

A year later the doctors were thrilled with his progress. We began discussing foster care again. He was still unsure, but agreed to really try this time. This was good enough for me. I knew I couldn?t make him or guilt him. This had to be a committed partnership if it was going to work. Our friends and family thought we were crazy. We should be traveling, fishing, knitting, relaxing, and sleeping. But we?weren?t?done, we could still make a difference. We took all the training, made the adjustments to the house to become licensed and waited.??We were approved in October through a private Christian agency. By March, still no kids. I had decided to switch over to the county. I knew there were children who needed us. I had the county packet all filled out when I got the call. Would we be willing to take two sisters for a short stay. The youngest was five and they wanted to get her out of the agency facility quickly. We had stipulated older kids, school age kids. I worked full time at my graphic art business out of my home. I needed the day to work, so no small children. I suppose the wait had made us desperate to get started so we said yes. Now, after the fact, I truly believe it was destiny, we were supposed to be the home and that is why we were childless.

I?ll never forget the Saturday morning when I watched them walk into the waiting area at the facility. They were so cute, but obviously scared. How odd to be picked up by a total stranger after you have been pulled from everything you know. To be told you were living with these strangers. I smiled and tried to reassure them, but it was awkward. You don?t want to be too aggressive, but you don?t want to be indifferent.

Just now while typing this, my little one climbed up in my lap. I asked her if she thought I was mean or nice when I got her that first day. She said??Mean?.

?Really, but I smiled at you.?

?Yeah, but I thought it was your mean smile,? she said.

Wow, I really did try to look friendly.

I brought the girls home, showed them their room and asked if they were hungry. It was so awkward. They were quiet and we could only get yes and no answers. I know we were over animated, too cheery and very annoying with our enthusiasm. I wanted to hug on them so bad, but did use restraint. We finally just let them be. They moved out to the back yard and were followed by our three dogs. We watched while the girls played with the dogs and began to relax. As we watched these lovely children, my anger began to build. How could someone abuse and neglect these sweet children? We didn?t have all the details but knew that the youngest child?s father was sitting in jail.

To break the ice, I took the girls grocery shopping. We had made a list of their favorite foods. It really was fun and they would grin every time a tasty choice went into the basket. By dinnertime, the stress was reduced. We talked about going to church in the morning, and they were excited.

Sunday morning was wonderful. My church family was so sweet and attentive to the girls. I know they felt loved and accepted. We went out to lunch afterward with my grown daughter and I noticed the youngest seemed lethargic compared to how chatty she had been that morning. She didn?t eat much and I checked her for a temperature. She was fine. Once home, she still appeared off. There was still no fever, just some congestion. By five o?clock, I was really worried. I told my husband that I was taking her to emergency to get her checked out. It felt like I was overacting, the stress of what she had been through would have wiped out a grown man. But I just knew in my core that something was wrong.

Once they checked her out in the emergency room, they explained that she was having an asthma complication. No one at the agency told us that she even had asthma. After several hours of breathing treatments and observation, they sent us home with a long list of medications that would become a daily regime. I left her home with my husband while I went to get the prescriptions filled.??When I returned, she was on my husband?s lap, looking very weak. I saw her belly popping when she breathed. ?I?m taking her back,? I told my husband. When we checked her temperature, she was burning up. Luckily a friend was living with us and was able to stay with our oldest. My husband drove us to the ER while I sat in back making sure our little one was breathing.

Once we got to the hospital, the staff surrounded us. She was put on machines, rushed to x-ray and we waited, scared to death. The doctors finally came in and explained that both lungs were solid pneumonia. Her oxygen levels were so low that she would not have survived the night. I felt myself conflicted with nausea from the near tragedy and relief that we had gotten her to the hospital in time.??She was admitted and I opted to stay overnight with her. My husband reluctantly left but had to get up early for work the next morning.

It was a difficult night. The nurses were in and out all night; my daughter would awaken and cry in fear. I?d comfort her as a mother would, it seemed to help but she didn?t know me. Early in the am she appeared stable and was sleeping soundly.??I needed to get home, get a few things since we?d be at the hospital for several days. I also needed to notify my clients that I was out of the office until further notice. They were all wonderful about the unexpected departure.

I was gone a short time, but returned to bedlam. My daughter had woken up and realized I was gone, and went postal. This was very dangerous for her physically. Her room was filled with doctors, nurses and an airvac crew trying to calm her down. The hospital felt that she needed extraordinary measures and had alerted Oakland Children?s Hospital. When she saw me, she stopped screaming and thrashing. She cried softly and reached for me while calling me mommy. My heart broke. In her fear, I was it. I was mom in this situation. The airvac pilot asked me if I had ever ridden in a helicopter and was I claustrophobic. I said I hadn?t and I wasn?t. ?Would you go with us? I need to have her calm for the flight and you?re the only thing that?s working. We do not want to sedate her.?

?Of course, ? I said.

Once we arrived at the children?s hospital, I spend five days in ICU. Don?t know if you have ever spent the night in ICU, but it was miserable. Sleeping in a chair crammed into the two feet between the hospital bed and the curtain. No bathroom or food privileges for parents. You have to leave the area. This wouldn?t be bad except for the panicked faces of the nurses confirming that you would be right back! Whenever I left, my daughter became quit obstinate and loud. Sadly, the nurses would tell me that I was the first foster mom to stay with their child. Second day in I developed a sinus infection and couldn?t talk or breath. The weekend came and my husband demanded that I come home to rest and he would take the weekend. He is such a good hubby.

My daughter was hospitalized for ten days. Friends helped out the last couple of days, and luckily, as she got better, her attitude improved. Once home, we began a very serious regiment of treatments and medications.??She has gotten pneumonia four times in eighteen months. Things are much better now, but we have to keep a close eye on her. The doctors believe she will outgrow the asthma and can enjoy a normal life.

While I was away, our oldest daughter was in total confusion. She was pulled out of home, school, and her sister was close to death. I felt so bad that I had been whisked away and hadn?t been able to be there for the transition.

After a year of parenting our girls, we were told that they would not be returning home and that they would be eligible for adoption. I never intended to adopt. I figured we?d foster until we couldn?t. I was also concerned about our age. I will be seventy when the youngest is eighteen. My husband is five years older than myself.??This is not the best situation for a child. But my husband began suggesting that we consider adopting the girls. I looked at this man who wouldn?t date me due to a son; now wanting to commit a lifetime to these two girls. I wondered who switched him out. I now know that it was God?s grace that touched my husband. He was smitten and couldn?t bear to lose our family.

I talked with the social workers and expressed my concern about our ages. The girls deserved young parents that would be able to do all the things I did with my kids. The reality was sobering. My older daughter?s delay and health issues would remove any adoption possibilities. The youngest was almost six and that was pushing the age limit. Most people want babies and toddlers.??The other complication was that the court would not want to separate the siblings. The odds of finding parents willing to adopt both the girls would be astronomical. They would more than likely continue in foster care until they were adults.

My husband and I sat down and really looked at the benefits and complications. We were relieved that financial assistance and medical coverage would continue. There was no way we could financially support two children for twelve years at our ages on our own. We even discussed if we died. My husband?s position was that they would be no worse off than they were right now. We would have whatever time we had left to encourage, nurture and love them. If they ended back up in the system, it would be unavoidable, not because of terrible choices their parents made.

I still wasn?t convinced. This was not the plan. My husband looked into my face and told me to close my eyes. I did.???Now I want you to picture the social worker at the front door, telling the girls to get their belongings. They were leaving with her and not coming back. Can you see that happening????I couldn?t. In that moment I realized that these were my kids. I loved them and I would do anything I had to.

I often hear how special my husband and I are. How generous, giving and self-sacrificing we are. But this is the reality. When I pictured the girls leaving, it was partly about their pain and confusion, but it was also about my loss. Our house is crazy, active and filled with laughter, energy and love. We have kids visiting, activities, appointments, crying, attitudes, accomplishments and sheer joy! Our daughters have brought life back into our home. We are not done. We have love and wisdom to share and deciding to foster and now adopt has been the most profound decisions we have ever made. We are planning an adoption celebration this July. Water slide, food, family and friends to join us begin our journey as a permanent family.

We still face some big struggles, not kidding myself that this is going to be a breeze. My girls have suffered a lot of damage at the hands of their biological family and healing will be slow. But I see it beginning. They are defining who they are and they are not unloved, insignificant victims. They are a hopeful hop-hop dancer, teacher, mother, doctor and policewoman. They now have a chance to have a full, productive life with parents that will protect and nurture them.

(AP) ? Francois Hollande is the man in charge after his Socialist Party swept France's parliamentary election. Voters welcomed the French president's vision of injecting government money into Europe's economies in hopes of helping the joint euro currency stave off disaster.

Socialists now have an unprecedented lock on politics in France, and plan to use it to raise taxes on big banks and oil companies, levy a 75-percent tax on incomes higher than ?1 million ($1.26 million) a year, and hire 60,000 teachers. Hollande's strong domestic mandate will let him push back in global economic talks against the budget cuts being demanded by Germany, which Greece and other indebted countries say are driving them deeper into the financial abyss by suffocating growth.

France's election Sunday also gave the far right National Front a toehold in parliament, a small but symbolic victory for a party that wants to stop immigration, dump the euro currency and decries the so-called "Islamization" of France. The conservative UMP party of former President Nicolas Sarkozy, which dominated the outgoing parliament, suffered the biggest losses.

The balloting to elect 577 lawmakers for France's lower ? and more powerful ? house of parliament came on the same day that conservatives won a parliamentary election in Greece.

With final results still coming in, pollsters estimated France's Socialists and their closest allies will hold between 313 and 315 seats, well over the 289 needed for a majority and exempting them from horse-trading with far-leftists who oppose some of Hollande's pro-European policies.

"This score exemplifies strong confidence in the president," said Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici, who won his own race for an Assembly seat. "This gives a spinal column to the government and strengthens it ... our commitments will be honored. We will not do any austerity."

Sarkozy's UMP party went from 304 seats in the old Assembly to an estimated 214 in the new one, after Sarkozy himself lost his re-election bid to Hollande just six weeks ago.

Hollande now has a free hand to push forward with his plans. He wants to crack down on tax shelters and encourage companies to reinvest their profits. Also on tap is requiring banks to split their traditional deposit-and-loan activities from their speculative bets in the financial markets.

Hollande's government has already made good on a controversial plan to lower the retirement age for some French workers to 60 from 62. He also slashed the salaries of government ministers by 30 percent ? a nod to a public wary of the much-criticized bling of Sarkozy's reign.

Hollande's pro-growth attitude is also attracting attention elsewhere in Europe. France is the eurozone's second-biggest economy and, along with powerhouse Germany, has a major role in EU policy and providing bailouts to weaker countries.

Hollande presented other European leaders last week with a new "growth pact" including ?120 billion ($151 billion) worth of measures around the continent to stimulate growth, the Journal du Dimanche newspaper reported. A French official confirmed the report but would not provide details.

The French-German tandem has come under strain in recent months, not least because Chancellor Angela Merkel has opposed Hollande's vocal push for government stimulus and is defending an austerity package that she worked out with Sarkozy, a fellow conservative.

Even against the recent throw-the-bums-out mindset in many parts of Europe, the turnaround for France's Socialists was remarkable. The party was riven for much of the past decade by personal infighting and ideological discord.

On Sunday, the Socialists gained more than 100 seats in the Assembly ? nearly all from the conservatives, discredited in the eyes of many voters after years of economic difficulties and high joblessness. Last fall, the Socialists seized control of the upper house of parliament, the Senate.

No matter who is in charge, there's plenty of challenges ahead.

France's debts are huge and its unemployment rate recently rose to 10 percent ? the highest rate in 13 years. The little-known ratings agency Egan-Jones Ratings downgraded French state debt to BBB+ from A- on Thursday, warning that French banks may soon come under strain.

"The work before us is immense. Nothing will be easy," Socialist Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said, acknowledging that France's financial situation is "difficult."

The anti-immigration National Front party won two seats in Sunday's election ? the most it has had since 1988, when the political system was more favorable to extremist candidates. Party leader Marine Le Pen lost her quest for a seat in the industrial north by just 118 votes, but her 22-year-old niece ? Marion Marechal-Le Pen ? won her race in the southeast and will become France's youngest lawmaker.

Marine Le Pen has revamped the party to try to shed its reputation as racist and anti-Semitic. She placed third in the presidential race. The party, known for its sharp-tongued critics, will get a high-profile platform from which to grill Hollande's ministers during weekly question time in the often-boisterous Assembly.

"This is a first step toward future elections," Marechal-Le Pen told BFM-TV.

In an election subplot, prominent Socialist Segolene Royal ? the mother of Hollande's four children and the runner-up to Sarkozy in the 2007 presidential vote ? lost her race in western France and her bid to become Parliament speaker. Her rival was a breakaway Socialist who had drawn the support of Hollande's current companion, journalist Valerie Trierweiler.

Sunday's result also exposed voter fatigue, coming so soon after Hollande's own victory on May 6. The turnout of 56 percent was the lowest recorded in modern France.

In a well-off area of central Paris, voter Eve Baume said she cast her ballot for the local socialist "because I've been waiting for change for a long time."

"I wanted to support Francois Hollande, the government and its projects," she said.

Pascal Albe, a voter from the working-class Paris suburb of Ivry-sur-Seine, said he generally votes for the right but he thought Hollande should have a Socialist-led parliament.

"Otherwise the country will be paralyzed, and especially now, we don't need that," he said.

UN suspends Syria monitoring due to rising violence

By Reuters

United Nations monitors in Syria have suspended operations because of the increasing violence over the last 10 days by President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebels seeking his overthrow, the head of the observer mission said on Saturday.

"The observers will not be conducting patrols and will stay in their locations until further notice," General Robert Mood said in a statement.

Mood said the intensification in violence was impeding the 300 unarmed U.N. monitors from carrying out their mandate to observe an April 12 ceasefire deal, which has failed to halt the violence.

US official: Russia sending troops to Syria

"This suspension will be reviewed on a daily basis. Operations will resume when we see the situation fit for us to carry out our mandated activities," Mood said.

Many hundreds of people, including civilians, rebels and government forces, have been killed in the two months since international mediator Kofi Annan's ceasefire deal was supposed to come into effect.

Last week shots were fired at a car carrying U.N. observers after they were turned away from the town of Haffeh by angry Assad supporters who threw stones and metal rods at their convoy, a spokeswoman for the monitors said.?

Social Commerce, Pinterest And The Future Of Fashion Retail

Screen Shot 2012-06-15 at 10.37.22 PMDeath of brick-and-mortar retail Andrew Chen?recently recommended a?video?to me, which inspired this post. It's a keynote by Ron Johnson, the CEO of JC Penney and the man behind Apple?s retail revolution. In the video, Johnson spoke about the history of the department store and why JC Penney has fallen behind. It wasn?t very long ago that stores like JC Penney, Nordstrom, and Gap were the pinnacles of fashion retail. These retailers provided better products at unbeatable prices. Retail buyers acted as personal curators for customers and the in-store experience was exceptional. Then came e-commerce. Predictable products like books, CDs, and electronics drove the first wave of e-commerce for e-tailers like Amazon. But fashion lagged behind. Consumers want a tactile, in-person experience when it comes to garments. They need to touch and try it on. Even as e-tailers?offered lower prices, consumers preferred to shop in stores. That all began to change when...

Obama holds gay pride reception at White House

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling gay supporters that they will have a friend and "fellow advocate" in the White House as long as he is president.

Obama spoke to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender guests during a White House reception marking LGBT Pride Month. He touted his administration's work on gay rights issues, including repealing the military's ban on openly gay service members. He said even though it may have taken more time than they would like, gays and lesbians have seen progress and lasting change under his administration.

The president also referenced his recent public embrace of gay marriage. He said that while some Americans may still be evolving on same-sex marriage, he and wife, Michelle, "have made up our minds on this issue." The remark drew extended applause.

The Moon Still Beckons... to Russia, Anyway: Analysis

The moon disappeared from NASA's radar screen in January 2010, when the Obama White House canceled the Bush-era Constellation program and its plan to return to the lunar surface by 2020. The space agency today is focused on privatizing cargo and astronaut transport to the International Space Station, then sending explorers to nearby asteroids in the late 2020s. But the moon just won't go away. Our nearest cosmic companion keeps popping up in discussions of where robots?and humans?should head next in space.

In the last 10 years, the U.S., Japan, Europe, India, and China have resumed the robotic exploration of the moon. Both China and Japan have expressed interest in returning human explorers there, with China announcing late last year a series of technological steps leading to a manned lunar mission.

Just this week, NASA itself unveiled a robot to prospect for lunar water ice and oxygen. (As I noted this week, tapping those kinds of resources could be a bonanza for future explorers by drastically reducing mission costs or supplying life-support needs at an astronaut outpost.) The Regolith and Environment Science and Oxygen and Lunar Volatile Extraction, or RESOLVE, is a four-wheeled drill rig, the size of a golf cart. Once safely on the moon, RESOLVE will drill for the ice deposits already spotted from orbiting sensors, and process lunar rocks and soil to release oxygen. RESOLVE will start field trials in July on lava beds outside Hilo, Hawaii.

But while NASA is thinking about lunar robots, Russia is thinking bigger. At the Global Space Exploration Conference (GLEX) in Washington last month, Russian space agency head Vladimir Popovkin confirmed that Russia has long-range plans to send cosmonauts to the moon. "We're not talking about repeating what mankind achieved 40 years ago," he said. "We're talking about establishing permanent bases."

This isn't the first time we've heard Russia's space agency talk about a moon base. In March, a leaked technology road map document from Roscosmos (that nation's federal space agency) suggested that the country could establish a cosmonaut outpost there soon after 2025. Speaking in April 2011 on the fiftieth anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first orbital flight, then-prime minister Vladimir Putin said, "Russia should not limit itself to the role of an international space ferryman. We need to increase our presence on the global space market."

Russian interest in the moon goes back half a century or more. Locked in a Cold War space race with the U.S., Russia was first to image the lunar far side, first to send a probe to strike the moon, first to soft-land a robot spacecraft there, and the first to return a robot sampling spacecraft from the lunar surface. But by the mid-1970s, having lost the manned moon race to Apollo and running short of cash, the Soviets left the lunar arena.

Now, though, Russia is looking back to the moon as a way to remain a major player in space. Putin's "ferryman" comment refers to the fact that Russia provides all the crew transportation to the ISS, and will do so for the next five years. But its transport monopoly could end by 2017, when the U.S. hopes to restore its own astronaut launch capability. With NASA focused on nearby asteroids and Mars, Russia may be trying to seize opportunity on our natural satellite, just three days from Earth.

Using today's technology to update its current rockets and Soyuz, Russia might assemble a lunar lander and return craft in Earth orbit. Russia has mentioned the European Space Agency (ESA) as a possible partner in lunar exploration; Roscosmos and ESA have collaborated on building ISS hardware, and ESA astronauts have long flown on Russian Soyuz craft to Mir and the International Space Station. Lunar exploration could give Russia a more prominent role than it has played in the U.S.-led ISS consortium.

Waiting on the moon is a nearly unexplored wilderness of immense scientific interest, with tempting water resources and plentiful oxygen to be mined from lunar rocks and soil. The South Pole-Aitken basin, a huge, 2600-km (1600 mi) wide asteroid impact crater (big enough to swallow half of China), may be four billion years old, preserving rocks from the most violent chapters in moon?Earth history. Water ice is present in some of the shadowed craters near the moon's south pole; getting at it could support a cosmonaut outpost and provide cheap fuel for return trips. For Russia, the moon seems to be an obvious land of opportunity.

Having heard announcements like these from Russia before, however, I'm skeptical they will follow through. The country is so strapped for cash that its space program can't assure the quality and reliability of its current rockets, let alone build a lunar craft. Just last year, a Russian probe launched to explore the Martian moons suffered a failure after launch and plunged ignominiously back into our atmosphere. I'll believe in Russia's future on the moon when real rubles put real rockets on the launch pad.

Karma rewards WiMAX subscribers for sharing their 4G

Karma rewards WiMAX subscribers for sharing their 4G

Normally, we associate Karma with religion, or if we're honest, luxury hybrid sedans. A company by the same name would rather you make that connection with WiMAX Internet service. Much like a 4G version of FON, subscribers to the Clearwire-rooted network are required to share their Internet link-ups with the public as a WiFi hotspot. As the name suggests, though, sharing the connection ideally pays back dividends through free access: for every guest who signs in on Facebook to get 100MB of free data through the hotspot, another 100MB goes towards the hotspot owner. If all goes well, the Karma user creates a virtuous circle (pun entirely intended) and pays little if anything for Internet access; while the WiMAX hotspot costs $69, the $14 per gigabyte rate only kicks in if the credit runs out. Trial runs are starting in New York City and might only hit 500 hotspots by the end of 2012, but the hope is to upturn the wider industry and make sure there's never a shortage of public WiFi.
