News Blog: OU-C adjunct faculty member Maryjo Flamm-Miller ...

Maryjo Flamm-Miller, an adjunct faculty member in education at Ohio University-Chillicothe, was recently recognized as the recipient of the 2012 Irene Bandy-Hedden Community Leadership Award from the Ohio Department of Education.
The award, named after the former associate superintendent of the Ohio Department of Education and a pioneer in the field of early education, recognizes outstanding contributions to early childhood education and care.

Nominated by the early childhood therapists at The Pioneer Center School, Flamm-Miller received the award during a recent event in Columbus. In introductory remarks, it was noted that ?Maryjo works tirelessly to create and led community programs for families that enhance young children?s well-being and relationships within families. She is innovative, excited, professional and a self-starter. Maryjo actively engages community partners in creative and fun programming for young children and their families.?

When asked about her thoughts on receiving the award, Flamm-Miller spoke about the influence of early childhood education partnerships in the region.

?The award certainly brings the spotlight to shine on all of the wonderful collaborations taking place in Ross County for the benefit of children and families,? Flamm-Miller said. ?I am proud to have been nominated by the early childhood therapists at Pioneer Center and am grateful for the opportunity to partner with them on many endeavors at our Child Development Center. Together, we are enlivening the region.?

In addition to teaching classes at OU-C, Flamm-Miller is a program specialist at Discovery Tree Family Resources in Ross County. She is past coordinator of the cultural arts program at Adena Elementary School, the former head of school at Southern Hills Academy and a past administrator at Cincinnati Waldorf School.

Flamm-Miller, who has been an educator for 34 years, earned her bachelor?s degree in education from Edgecliff College in Cincinnati and her master?s degree in education from Xavier University.
