Steve Gagne ? Food Energetics [1 eBook - EPUB, MOBI, 1 JPG ...

Steve Gagne ? Food Energetics ? The Spiritual, Emotional, and Nutritional Power of What We Eat

Explains how food imparts a living wisdom that is separate from the science of nutrient values

? Offers an approach to diet from the perspective of ancient peoples, who understood how the energetic qualities of food affect both physical and spiritual health

? Includes a comprehensive catalog of the energetic properties of myriad foods from chicken, beef, and potatoes to garlic, avocados, zucchini, and grapefruit

Food is more than simply fuel. It imparts a living wisdom that is beyond the science and mechanics of calories, grams, and nutrient values. Ancient peoples, through their relationships with the plants and animals providing their food, understood that their food conveyed the unique energetic qualities of its source, such as swiftness from wild deer and groundedness from root vegetables. With the rise of agribusiness and industrial food production, people have become disconnected from the sources of their food and are no longer able to register the subtle rhythms, harmony, and energies that food can convey. This separation has thrown the basic human-food relationship out of balance to the detriment of human consciousness.

In Food Energetics, Steve Gagne shows how to revitalize our connection to food and remedy our physical and psychic imbalances with the wisdom of food energetics. He provides a comprehensive catalog of foods and their corresponding energetic properties and explains how each food affects us at the deepest spiritual level. By demonstrating how to plan meals that incorporate both dominant and compliant foods, he shows how to provide truly healthy cuisine that nourishes the body and the soul.

Sweating The Small Stuff: Sotheby?s Selling Original Steve Jobs Note About Atari Circuit Improvements

sjmemo4

The auction house Sotheby?s is selling an official memo from Steve Jobs to Atari about improving the World Cup Football game. The pages ? stamped and signed by Jobs himself ? describe circuit diagrams and paddle layouts. Delightfully, the stamp says ?All-One Farm Design? and features a Buddhist mantra, ?gate gate paragate parasangate bodhi svahdl.? As you do.

If you?re thinking of picking this up you?d best have about $10,000 to $15,000 handy ? although bidding could get fierce. Quoth MacWorld:

The June 15th, 2012 auction features a 5 page memo sent to Atari employee Steve Bristow by Steve Jobs. This memo describes changes that could be made to Atari?s World Cup Soccer arcade game. These changes were designed to add play variety to the game and to extend the ?shelf life? for arcade operators. While the memo is typed on Atari letterhead, it also features a stamp imprinted with the name of Steve Job?s company at the time ?All-One Farm Design? and the address of the Jobs family garage( and the birthplace of Apple Computer). The memo features a circuit diagram and a hand written addendum.

This is the earliest know documentation produced by Steve Jobs and predates the founding of Apple computer by almost two years. No other documents from Steve Jobs time at Atari are known to exist. Sotheby?s sold another Steve Jobs document in December, 2011 for $1.6 million.

If you?re really feeling spendy, you can plop down $180,000 on an original Apple I circuit board, presumably in mint condition. Get cracking and don?t forget: Sabbe satta sukhi hontu.

2 Belden Delis In Legal Spat Over Classic Chicago Restaurant ...

CHICAGO (CBS) ? For many years, the Belden Deli was just a memory of an earlier time in Chicago, but now, a legal dispute is brewing between two restaurants that are both using the name.

Leon Greenberg, a New York native, and Paul Leff, a 25-year veteran of the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant group and most recently, Max?s Deli in Highland Park ? are set to open a new Belden Deli this coming Tuesday at 2301 N. Clark St. in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The site at the ground floor of the old Tower Records building is the same location where the original Belden deli operated from 1957 to 1989.

But another unrelated Belden Deli ? formally named the Belden Deli, Restaurant and Catering ? opened back in February in the Maller?s Building, at 5 S. Wabash Ave. on Jewelers Row downtown. It is owned by the family that once owned the Belden North Deli ? a secondary location of the original deli at Howard Street and Western Avenue in West Rogers Park.

Both restaurants are laying claim to the name, and the Lincoln Park deli is seeking an injunction demanding that the Loop restaurant drop the Belden Deli name. But Loop Belden restaurant manager Kiki Ress says, ?Absolutely not.?

Greenberg says he registered the Belden Deli name with the State of Illinois back last summer, mounted a Web site, and began preparations for opening the new business. He said when he registered his trademark, the Belden Deli name had been legally ?abandoned? and was no longer in use even on paper by any business.

?There was nothing there,? Greenberg said. ?I?ve been in touch with the Trademark Department, and approval is probably in the next four to six weeks, because they said there was nothing there with the Belden Deli.?

But Ress said her family had gone through its own legal process to resume using the Belden Deli name ? and the old logo for the restaurant with its stylized B. Her family filed for a service mark for the logo, and told officials they had been using the name since buying the Belden North some 20 years ago.

?My family has been in the business since 1992,? Ress said. The Belden North closed in 1998, she said.

But Greenberg says regardless of all that, the Belden Deli name itself was never registered by Ress? family or anyone else. He said it was not listed by the U.S. Patent Trademark Office or the Illinois Secretary of State?s office when he sought to use it.

?We did all of our due diligence,? he said. ?We?re not going to use name if there is any kind of claim to it.?

Greenberg said the Loop Belden Deli?s legal name as registered with the state is the ?5 S. Wabash Deli,? and initially did not register a separate ?DBA,? or ?does business as? name. The Loop Belden later registered the ?DBA? name ?Belden Deli and Restaurant,? he said.

Greenberg said attorneys for the Lincoln Park restaurant will be suing to demand that the Loop restaurant stop using the Belden name.

But Ress says if anyone has the right to use the name, it is her family?s Loop restaurant. While Greenberg says his restaurant acquired the trademark for the Belden Deli, Ress says Greenberg and Leff never filed for a service mark like the one her family used to resume use of the old chain?s logo.

Her family even kept the menu from the old Belden Deli chain, and the menu for the new restaurant is ?pretty much the same? she said.

The Web site for the Wabash Avenue restaurant presents it as a continuation of the old Belden chain. Its ?welcome? page features a short article with the headline, ?Belden deli restaurant returns!? and tells customers, ?Welcome back to your old favorite deli restaurant.?

And by opening a new restaurant with the Belden Deli name at the old chain?s original location, Ress said, ?They?re trying to ride the name of the original owners.?

Greenberg says he understands Ress? position about her family?s connection to the Belden Deli name, since they were the last owners of the Belden. But he says he and Leff are rightful owners of the name now, and the Loop restaurant needs to stop using it.

?They never did anything legally with the name, and it?s been inactive and abandoned for 20-plus years,? he said.

Ress says her family is set to meet with attorneys later Friday on the matter. As for whether she would like Greenberg and Leff to stop using the name, she said: ?We hope for a peaceful resolution. That?s about it,? and declined further comment.

The original Belden Deli at 2315 N. Clark St. was a 24-hour restaurant located in a small strip mall at the northeast corner of Clark and Belden, which also housed a Jewel grocery store.

The original Belden Deli and its sister locations had been owned by brothers Chris and Sam Markos and their father, Peter, since 1973. After the original deli closed, the remaining Belden delis were sold to separate owners, according to published reports.

Meanwhile, the building that housed the original Belden was replaced in the early 1990s, with the Belden Centre, a condo and retail complex once known for its Tower Records store, where Greenberg and Leff?s new Belden Deli will be located.

Real estate industry pushes Senate on refi bill | Medill | Washington

by Mara Grbenick, Medill News Service for Marketwatch on 05/24/12

WASHINGTON ? Real estate and mortgage industry leaders urged a Senate committee on Thursday to back a plan that would lower interest rates for homeowners with government-owned mortgages.

Appearing before the Senate Banking Committee, Mark Zandi, chief economist and cofounder of Moody?s Analytics, said lawmakers must act quickly because ?mortgage rates are very low, and this is such a good time to refinance.?

The Responsible Homeowner Refinancing Act of 2012, proposed by Senate Democrats Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Barbara Boxer of California, would benefit homeowners whose mortgages are owned by the government-supported entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and whose homes are worth less than the value of their current loan.

The legislation is part of President Barack Obama?s ?to-do? list for Congress, a set of measures that hasn?t received a warm response on Capitol Hill.

?We need to fix the housing market to get the economy moving and create jobs,? Menendez said. ?Refinancing should be one of the strategies [to attack the housing problem,] particularly for borrowers who are making their payments, whose interest rates on their mortgages are above today?s interest rates.?

Under the plan, homeowners could take advantage of current market mortgage interest rates, which are between about 3.875% and 4.5% versus the 5% or 6% that some homeowners now pay.

The bill would go further than the existing Home Affordable Refinance Program. Now in its second stage, HARP is ?not designed to help enough underwater homeowners who are eligible and deserve assistance,? said Bill Emerson, CEO of Quicken Loans, Inc.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency, the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, said there have been just 1.2 million HARP refinancings since the program?s inception in 2009 ? a ?disappointment?, according to Zandi.

Borrowers who would become eligible for refinancing under the proposal would save on average between $2,500 and $3,000 annually, according to industry experts. This could help prevent bankruptcy filings and the impact on local communities would be ?significant,? said Moe Veissi, president of the National Association of Realtors.

The legislation didn?t get an entirely hostile response from Republicans. Sen. Robert Corker, a committee member and Tennessee Republican, said he is ?open to looking at this? and that he hopes there will be a mark-up on the bill.

In the interest of streamlining the process while the interest rate environment is favorable, witnesses said it would be an appropriate compromise to target loans originated prior to June 1, 2009, rather than through the proposed extended period of July 1, 2010.

If the bill does not pass, ?roughly 2.5. million to 3.5 million refinancings would still happen? in the existing HARP, Zandi said.

Estimates from the Congressional Budget Office show that bill would pay for itself because of reduced default rates.

The Federal Reserve is now the largest mortgage-backed securities investor with $1.25 trillion in assets, Zandi said. Mortgage-backed securities investors continue to receive interest payments when borrowers are able to pay their loans, and ?one might argue no bigger beneficiary from government policy throughout the financial crisis than mortgage securities investors,? Zandi said.

Terror suspect's eye color? Flying cameras know

Helicopters used by the Air Support Unit of London's Metropolitan Police will be keeping a close watch on potential security threats during this summer's Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Games.

By Michele Neubert and Rachele Webb, NBC News

LONDON --?Helicopter-mounted cameras capable of identifying the color of a suspect's shoelaces on the ground from almost a mile away have been?unveiled?as?a key weapon for security officials preparing of this summer's London Olympics.

The?U.K. capital's Metropolitan Police?plan to?use the airborne cameras to monitor large areas that would otherwise need to be secured by dozens of officers on the ground. They will also be utilized during Diamond Jubilee celebrations -- which recognize Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne.

The devices feature powerful zoom?functions which?can even allow officers flying in helicopters to see the color of a suspect's eyes on the ground.

Portraits of the queen: When the monarch becomes the subject

The aircraft will be used to monitor open public areas such as the River Thames, where huge crowds are expected to congregate to watch a royal flotilla as part of the Jubilee events. Images will then be fed back to police command centers on the ground.

Metropolitan Police Constable Ian Miller told NBC News: "We'll be able to deal with most threats. Primarily, it's going to be public safety -- the river itself is a hazard and there's going to be a lot of crowds.

British queen's lunch guests spark controversy

More than 300,000 extra visitors are expected in London over the weekend of June 2-5, when most of the Diamond Jubilee events will take place.

They may not have Q in their corners, but real spies do have gadgets that would fit right into a James Bond movie. Msnbc.com's Rosa Golijan tours an exhibition of spy tools.

"We provide an aspect of the security plan that's not easily achieved on the ground so we can see rooftops, we can see inaccessible places and we can do so very, very quickly and efficiently from the helicopter," police Sergeant Richard Brandon added. "If we were to try and search all of those areas with conventional search teams, it would take weeks -- if not months ?-- to fully clear those sites.

U.S. says drug abuse needs treatment, not just jail - Health Nutrition ...

LONDON (Reuters) ? The United States sees drug abuse as a public health problem as much as a crime issue and is seeking to learn from countries in Europe and elsewhere about how to treat addiction as a disease, Barack Obama?s drugs policy chief said on Tuesday.

Gil Kerlikowske, the U.S. president?s director of national drug control policy, said the United States is taking a more balanced approach to substance abusers rather than fighting a ?war on drugs? centered mainly on law enforcement.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to London, Kerlikowske, a former police chief, said major advances in medical science had shown that drug abuse disorders are chronic diseases of the brain that can be effectively prevented and treated.

He said the international community should recognize this and work together on program to prevent and treat abusers, help addicts recover, and explore reforms to criminal justice systems to stop the revolving door of drug use, criminal behavior, jail, release, and re-arrest.

?It?s very clear we can?t arrest our way out of this problem,? he said. ?The availability of quality treatment and the engagement of the public health sector and primary care physicians in drug issues is very critical.?

While officials say overall illicit drug use in the United States has dropped substantially over the past 30 years, there are upwards of 20 million Americans who could benefit from treatment and recovery programs, Kerlikowske said. Currently, only around 4 million of these get the kind of help they need.

Prescription drug abuse has become a serious concern in the United States in recent years and was the second-biggest factor behind accidental deaths in 2007.

Kerlikowske, who was in London as part of a tour through Sweden, Britain and Russia this week, said the Obama administration was eager to talk to those dealing with drug addiction problems in other countries to see whether elements of their approaches could be useful in the United States.

He has also previously visited Portugal and Italy, as well as Mexico, Colombia and other countries in South America to see different kinds drug treatment programs and prevention plans.

He noted what he described as a ?somewhat successful? fresh approach in Portugal, where since 2001 authorities have dispensed with arrests, trials and prison for people carrying a personal supply of any drug from marijuana to heroin and focused their efforts on prevention messages and treatment.

?We?re happy to learn from and visit and have our eyes wide open to look at these other countries,? he said. ?But it should be noted that about 85 percent of all drug treatment research is conducted or funded in the United States?so we?re also happy to share with other countries what we have learned.?

Drug enforcement experts in the United States say the evidence strongly supports the wider use of drug courts, which seek to impose treatment programs instead of prison sentences on repeat criminals who are dependent on illegal drugs.

Kerlikowske said he had never been a fan of the concept of a ?war on drugs?. However, just a few years ago, he said he would have agreed with what he says was probably the majority view among the American public ? that if you had a drug problem ?you just needed to find God or pull yourself up by your bootstraps.?

Now scientific research has changed that view, he said. ?The scientists..have all recognized addiction as a disease, and it doesn?t take a huge amount of reading of research papers to understand and accept the scientific evidence.

?The problem is that is disease is chronic. Unfortunately, it doesn?t led itself to a quick fix.?

A health-agency windfall includes funding for two promising clinical trials, one focusing on prevention and the other on early treatment

From Nature magazine

Of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States, Alzheimer's disease--which ranks sixth--is particularly devastating in that there is no cure, no way to prevent it and no proven way to slow its progression. And with at least 11 million Americans expected to have the disease by the middle of the century--boosting the annual costs of health care to more than $1 trillion--the U.S. government is anxiously looking to researchers to improve the prognosis.

Last week, the government set out how it planned to spend a $50-million top-up to this year's funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md., announced in February as part of a bid to "prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer's disease by 2025".

The money adds to the $448 million that the NIH was allocated to spend on the disease this year, and roughly half of it is already being used by scientists funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute and the National Institute on Aging. They are preparing to conduct whole-genome and whole-exome studies to discover mutations that may predispose someone to the disease or protect against it. The scientists are assembling a bank of thousands of DNA samples from patients and other people whose DNA could be informative--such as elderly individuals who carry predisposing mutations but show no sign of the disease. The first results from the effort are expected as early the end of this year.

Of the remaining money, $4 million will fund Alzheimer's-oriented grants to small businesses, and $2 million will be used to help generate model human Alzheimer's cells from induced pluripotent stem cells. The rest will be devoted to two groundbreaking clinical trials, one of which builds on the fact that Alzheimer's begins to attack the brain 10-15 years before symptoms appear--a conclusion confirmed by new imaging tools that allow the disease to be monitored in living people.

This trial will receive $16 million, and is the first attempt to avert the onset of Alzheimer's by treating people who have not yet developed symptoms. It is a five-year study using an antibody called crenezumab, made by Genentech of South San Francisco, California. Already in phase II trials in patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms, the drug is thought to work by binding to fragments of amyloid-beta--insoluble, neuron-damaging peptides that aggregate in the brains of those with Alzheimer's--both neutralizing it and making it easier for immune cells in the brain to eliminate it (see 'Neural defenders'). The Banner Alzheimer's Institute (BAI) in Phoenix, Ariz., together with a team at the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia, will test the drug against a placebo in 300 symptom-free people, two-thirds of whom carry a rare genetic mutation that makes them certain to get the disease. Mild cognitive impairment sets in at a median age of 44 in people carrying the mutation, and full-blown dementia at 49, decades earlier than is common with the more typical sporadic form of the disease.

Most of the participants will come from a well-studied extended Colombian family living in Medellin and its surrounding rural areas that is estimated to have 5,000 members. They range from educated urbanites to humble farmers, all descendants of the same eighteenth-century founder. Although most do not know, and do not wish to know, their genetic status, about 1,500 are estimated to carry the mutation.

"You cannot meet these families and not be converted to their cause. It's heartbreaking," says Eric Reiman, one of the trial's three leaders and executive director of the BAI.

The other trial will receive $7.9 million and is being led by Suzanne Craft, a neuropsychologist at the University of Washington and associate director of geriatric research at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, both in Seattle. It will test an intranasal insulin spray against placebo in people with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer's. Insulin receptors are abundant in synapses in brain regions that are important for memory and cognition, and in Alzheimer's, amyloid-beta can knock out the receptors and disrupt memory formation. Flooding rat brain cells with insulin has been found to block the fragments and protect the receptors (F. G. De Felice et al. Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 106, 1971-1976; 2009). When Craft tried the strategy in humans by giving intranasal insulin to people with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer's, the results were impressive: about three-quarters remained stable or improved cognitively over the four months of treatment, Craft says.

Further Progress Made For DCVax-L Brain Cancer Clinical Trial

Further Progress Made For DCVax-L Brain Cancer Clinical Trial ?

Grant Zeng, CFA

On May 17, 2012, Northwest Biotherapeutics (NWBO) announced that it already has 41 clinical trial sites open and recruiting across the United States in its ongoing clinical trial of DCVax-L immune therapy for Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most lethal form of brain cancer. ?

This is ahead of the Company?s previous projection of 40 sites by the end of Q2, 2012.? The Company plans to continue adding clinical trial sites in the US and Europe, and expects to have at least 60 sites open and enrolling by the end of Q3, 2012.? The Company plans to have total of 80 sites for the trial.

The Company also announced that the FDA has accepted an amendment of the clinical trial. The amendment does not make any change in the treatment regimen, which leaves all data collected to date intact for use in the trial?s overall results. The amendment includes the following:? ?

  • ?? ?The previous Phase II trial has been designation as a Phase III trial;
  • ?? ?Expanded and enhanced statistical endpoint analyses;
  • ?? ?With the addition of another cohort of patients which can potentially expand the application of DCVax-L, the trial size has been increased up to 300 patients from previous 240 patients;? ?
  • ?? ?Addition of interim analyses for efficacy;

As a reminder, the previous Phase II trial of DCVax-L is an ongoing randomized, placebo controlled, double blinded (2:1) study with a cross-over arm allowing control patients to be treated with DCVax-L in the event that their cancer progresses. The primary end point is progression free survival (PFS) with overall survival (OS) as the secondary end point. The original 240-patient trial is designed to enable the Company to petition the FDA for accelerated approval if the study generates results similar to those achieved in the two prior Phase I clinical trials.

    Our Immediate Takeaways

This announcement is another indication that NWBO is making further progress in its key program DCVax-L for brain cancer.

The Company has continuously beats its expectations about adding new clinical trial sites. In addition, the official designation of the previous Phase II trial of DCVax-L as a Phase III trial makes DCVax-L one step closer to the market. This is also a further indication that management is making every effort to make this breakthrough medicine to brain cancer patients around the world though the evolution of this trial to a Phase III trial is no assurance of the outcome.

In order to accelerate the clinical trial and expand it to Europe, the Company established two partnerships in April. One is with the Fraunhofer IZI Institute in Germany, and another one is with King?s Health Partners in London, Britain. Both institutions are prestigious health organizations in Europe.? We think the two partnerships in Germany and Britain are very encouraging news and positive to NWBO in the following aspects:

  • ?? ?The two partnerships will help accelerate the Company?s ongoing international Phase II clinical trial of DCVax-L for GBM (designed and powered as a pivotal trial). Data from Germany and Britain combined with US clinical sites could form the basis for the submission of a BLA in the US and EU.
  • ?? ?The compassionate use of DCVax-L will help extend lives for other patients who are not qualified while the trials are ongoing. It may also bring some additional revenues for the Company although it won?t be material in our view.
  • ?? ?The collaborations also expand NWBO?s manufacturing capacity and flexibility for DCVax? products, without the need for any capital investment by the Company.
  • ?? ?Overall, the partnerships with King?s Health Partners and the Fraunhofer IZI Institute provide solid foundation for NWBO?s programs in Europe upon which NWBO can proceed with clinical trials in Europe, and with compassionate use treatments of patients in parallel with such clinical trials.

With the new announcement about the trial sites update and amendment to the Phase II trial, the Company?s lead program has advanced and emerged as 300-patient, international Phase III trial, involving some of the best institutions in the US, UK and Germany. ?

The Company plans to petition for product approval in the U.S. and/or the European Union if the Phase III trial results are positive. In such a case, DCVax-L could potentially be the second active immunotherapy for cancer in the US and the first active immunotherapy for cancer in the EU.

Samsung UN40ES6500F

The Samsung UN46ES6500F ($1,729.99 list) is a smart-looking 46-inch HDTV with 3D capabilities, loads of interactive web services, and built-in Wi-Fi. It delivers very accurate colors and a crisp, clean HD picture, but the LED backlit panel could be brighter. You won't get dark inky blacks with this model either, and it only has three HDMI ports. However, it does offers some neat features, including two sets of active shutter 3D glasses and Samsung's Smart Hub menu system that makes it easy to launch apps, play multimedia files and movies, surf the web, and connect to other devices.

Editors' Note: This review is based on tests performed on the Samsung UN46ES6500F, the 46-inch model in the same series. Besides the screen size difference, the 40-inch $1,499.99 UN40ES6500F is identical in features, and while we didn't perform lab tests on this specific model, we expect similar performance.

Design and Features
Style-wise, the UN46ES6500F is easy on the eyes. The panel, which actually measures 45.9 inches, is framed by an ultra-slim (0.5-inch) matte black bezel and sits in a slender 1.25 inch cabinet (the bottom juts out to 1.9 inches to accommodate the down-firing speakers). The bezels are decorated with beveled clear trim, giving the set a pleasing angular look. A shiny Samsung badge protrudes downward from the center of the bottom bezel. The sturdy four-legged stand is piano black and can swivel smoothly.

Two USB ports and one HDMI port are vertically positioned at the rear of the cabinet and facing right. Two additional HDMI ports and one more USB port are flush mounted along with digital audio in and out connections, an optical audio output, shared component and composite AV jacks, a TV cable/antenna jack, a LAN port, and an EX-Link (serial) port. While most HDTVs this size offer four HDMI ports, the UN46ES6500F only gives you three, which can be a problem if you have a set top box, a Blu-ray player, and more than one gaming console.?

There are no function buttons on the UN46ES6500F. Instead, there's a small joystick control mounted on the lower right side of the back panel that lets you access and navigate the various menu pages. It's easier to use the remote to adjust settings and launch apps. The 9-inch wand is backlit and has all the usual player, volume, and channel controls. The number buttons are a tad small and the backlighting is slightly dim, but the remote is lightweight and fits comfortably in the hand. In the center of the remote is a colorful Smart Hub key.

Samsung's Smart Hub provides a single point of access for launching Web apps, streaming content from the Web and compatible DLNA devices over an Ethernet connection or the UN46ES6500F's built-in Wi-Fi, playing movies, and accessing USB based content. The icon-driven menu is colorful and easy to navigate. It includes the cloud-based Family Story app, which lets families share photos and videos and schedule events, an interactive Fitness app for body sculpting, fat burning, and weight monitoring, and a Kids portal featuring several?Canimals?episodes, WordWorld, and other kid oriented apps.

Samsung's Web app catalog is extensive, offering more than 70 information channels including Save Our Planet, The History Of America, and Home Safety. Streaming movie apps include Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, CinemaNow, and Blockbuster, and there are over 90 free and paid games available. Education services include Today In History, the Periodic Tables, and Guitar Chords, and you get about a dozen sports apps including MLB, NBA, and ESPN. You can also access most social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Picasa) and surf the Web with the built-in browser.

The UN46ES6500F provides plenty of picture settings to help you get the best possible picture for your lighting environment. There are four picture modes (Standard, Dynamic, Movie, and Natural) with optimized settings for their respective function. Movie mode offers the best all-around picture, especially if you're in a dimly lit room. You get all the basic settings, including backlight, brightness, contrast, sharpness, color, and tint controls, as well as a handful of advanced settings such as 10-point white balance, gamma, flesh tone, black tone, and dynamic contrast ratio. Picture options include AutoMotion Plus with judder and blur reduction for eliminating motion artifacts, film mode (for content shot at 24 fps), and LED Motion Plus, which uses backlight strobe to help reduce motion blur.

Performance
The UN46ES6500F's performance was a mixed bag. While seated at dead center it provided a realistic 3D picture with very little crosstalk while watching?Sharks 3D. Crosstalk was more prominent when seated at an extreme angle but the 3D effect was still enjoyable. The set comes with two pairs of lightweight active shutter glasses which are fairly comfortable but not very stylish. They also let too much light in from the sides.

Using images from the DisplayMate suite of HDTV diagnostic tests, a Chroma Meter, and SpectraCal's Calman software, the panel produced a peak brightness reading of 101.81 cd/m2?after a basic darkroom calibration. That's not very bright for an LED backlit HDTV, especially when compared to other LED sets like the?Vizio M3D550KD ($1,429.99, 4 stars) (364.75 cd/m2) and LG 55LM6700 ($2,299.99, 4 stars) (256.68 cd/m2). Moreover, the UN46ES6500F's black level (0.06 cd/m2) can't touch that of the Vizio (0.02 cd/m2) or the LG (0.03 cd/m2), and its measured contrast ratio of 1696:1 is mediocre at best.

On the plus side the UN46ES6500F delivers very accurate colors out of the box, as shown in the CIE Chromaticity Chart below (the red, green, and blue boxes represent the CIE standard for each color and the circles represent the panel's actual reading). It also has a wide off-angle viewing range; there was hardly any color shifting when viewed from an extreme side angle and the panel did not lose luminance.

Scenes from?Piranha?on Blu-ray were crisp with natural looking skin tones, but shadow detail suffered a bit as a result of the panel's inability to display dark blacks, and you don't get the kind of punchy picture that you get from a panel with a high contrast ratio. Still, the UN46ES6500F delivers a very sharp, noise-free picture.

The UN46ES6500F is easy on power but not quite as eco-friendly as the larger LG 55LM6700. During my testing it used 93 watts of power with power saving disabled and 53 watts with power saving set to low, while the LG used 67 watts and 48 watts, respectively. You can cut the UN46ES6500F's power consumption even more by setting power saving to medium (41 watts) or high (28 watts), but both settings are much too dim.

Conclusion
The Samsung UN46ES6500F is a capable 46-inch HDTV that is tastefully designed and offers a nice feature set, including two sets of 3D glasses, lots of interactive apps, and a cloud-based family portal. Its color quality is top notch, but its peak brightness and black level performance hold it back. All told, you'll get better performance from our recent budget Editors' Choice, the Vizio M3D550KD, and you'll get more screen and save a few hundred dollars while you're at it.

Gudgel is responsible for driving the strategic growth and profitability of the business, and managing Meritor?s customer relationships in the region. ?Steve is a great asset to our European organization,? says Tim Bowes, president, Commercial Truck, Meritor. ?His significant business, operations and plant management experience, combined with his industry knowledge, will be key as we continue our growth in Europe.?

Gudgel was formerly general manager, Operations, Europe. Prior to joining Meritor in December 2008, he served as vice president, Operations, Electrical Aftermarket, for Remy International in Anderson, Ind., where he spent 10 years in a variety of leadership positions of increasing responsibility. Before joining Remy, Gudgel spent several years with Delphi and Delco-Remy in plant management and operations roles.

Barros is responsible for the profitability, strategic direction and continued regional focus on Meritor?s global customers. ?Silvio is an energetic leader who has successfully managed the growth of Meritor?s business in South America,? says Bowes. ?There is no better choice for this position than Silvio.?

Previously, he was general manager, South America. Barros has held several sales, marketing and engineering positions during his 14 years with Meritor. Prior to joining the company, Barros held senior leadership positions in marketing and sales at SKF and Bosch Corp.

Meritor also recently named Tim Burns vice president and general manager, Defense & Specialty, Industrial; and Mikel Slater vice president, Business Unit/Functional Human Resources and Talent Acquisition.

Burns is responsible for the planning, organization and execution of all strategies and policies for the Defense and Specialty businesses. ?Tim is a fantastic leader with a wealth of experience,? said Pedro Ferro, president, Industrial, Meritor. ?He has an extensive background in strategic planning, program management and sales and service, which makes him an ideal candidate to lead these growing businesses.?

Previously, he was vice president, Global Defense. Burns has been with Meritor and its predecessor companies for 30 years, holding various positions within Rockwell Aerospace & Electronics, the former aircraft business unit, with increasing responsibilities in the areas of industrial engineering, contract administration and contract and pricing management.

Slater is responsible for leading the Human Resources team directly in support of Meritor?s business segments, as well as all staff functions; additionally, he is responsible for the company?s Talent Acquisition activities. Prior to taking on this new role, Slater was senior director, Global Human Resources. He joined Meritor in October 2000. Prior to joining Meritor, he held positions of increasing responsibility at MichCon, now DTE Energy.

?Mikel has played an integral role in the development and execution of Meritor?s human resource policies and programs,? said Larry Ott, senior vice president, Human Resources, Meritor. ?His knowledge and background will provide his team the strategic direction needed to implement Meritor?s global HR strategy.?

Follow this Rx to ease the trauma ? Business Management Daily ...

When you have to deliver bad news to someone, follow this protocol that medical doctors use to tell patients about dire prognoses:
  1. Find out how much your ?patients? already know. Are they familiar with the background problems that led to the decision you?re about to announce? If not, fill them in.
  2. Respond to emotions. Don?t lapse into clich?s (?I feel your pain?), but saying ?I understand how this news may make you feel? shows that you?ve considered the impact of the news you?re delivering.
  3. Specify a follow-up step. Have outplacement counselors or other support providers available immediately to provide support.
