Excited, but cold: Scientists unveil the secret of a reaction for prebiotic synthesis of organic matter

June 24, 2013 ? How is it that a complex organism evolves from a pile of dead matter? How can lifeless materials become organic molecules that are the bricks of animals and plants? Scientists have been trying to answer these questions for ages. Researchers at the Max Planck Institut f?r Kohlenforschung have now disclosed the secret of a reaction that has to do with the synthesis of complex organic matter before the origin of life.

Since the 1960's it has been well known that when concentrated hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is irradiated by UV light, it forms an imidazole intermediate that is a key substance for synthesis of nucleobases and nucleotides in abiotic environment. The way how UV radiation acts in this reaction to produce complex organic matter was, however, never clarified. Dr. Mario Barbatti and his colleagues in Germany, India and Czech Republic have now shown how this process occurs via computer simulations.

Using diverse computational-chemistry methods, the team has arrived at astonishing conclusions: For example that the reaction does not take place in the hot spot created by the solar radiation. "This has nothing to do with heat, but with electrons," says Mario Barbatti.

The reaction proceeds through a series of electronically excited intermediates. The molecules get into the "electronic excited state" because of the UV radiation, which means that their electrons are distributed in a much different way than the usual. That changes the molecule's attitudes. "But this takes some time," says Mario Barbatti. They showed that the radiation energy is dissipated too fast, and because of that each reactant molecule absorbs hundreds of UV photons before it finally gets converted into the imidazole intermediate.

"This is very inefficient -- and quite extraordinary," says Mario Barbatti. That is why it was quite challenging to comprehend the reaction, explains the physicist from Brazil. He and his colleagues have calculated a lot of possible intermediates, tried -- and discarded most of them. Finally they found out that there is only one single pathway that is consistent with the fast energy dissipation and previous experimental observations.

But why did they work on the computer? Isn't it the case that chemical reactions are worked on in laboratories? "Some intermediates are too elusive to analyze them in the laboratory -- they disappear before we may see them," Barbatti explains. Computational Chemistry allows the scientists to comprehend the reactions in a theoretical way.

"As I said before, this reaction has nothing to do with heat," says Barbatti. The transformation works in a cold environment, as in comets and in terrestrial ices, where spontaneous HCN polymerization is most expected to occur.

The team has published their results, which help to understand the role of solar radiation on the origin of life, in the recent issue of Angewandte Chemie.

Interview: what leaders of defunct 'gay conversion' group are planning

Leaders of Exodus International, which announced it is closing this week, are starting a new group aimed at finding common ground within conservative churches and fostering acceptance of all sexual orientations.?

By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / June 22, 2013

Exodus International, a longtime leader in the Christian "gay conversion therapy" movement, is closing its doors, having concluded that trying to counsel people out of same-sex attractions doesn?t work and can do grave harm. The group?s president, Alan Chambers, issued a lengthy apology this week at the organization?s final conference.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But the debate within the conservative Christian world over homosexuality is far from over, and it may well get sharper as the politics of gay rights ? especially gay marriage ? intensifies.?

Most of Exodus?s affiliates had already left before Mr. Chambers?s announcement and are expected to keep doing conversion therapy. A new umbrella group is already in place, the Restored Hope Network, which its website says is ?dedicated to restoring hope to those broken by sexual and relational sin, especially those impacted by homosexuality.? On Friday and Saturday, the group is having its first annual conference in Oklahoma City.

But some of Exodus?s leaders aren?t going away. They?re planning a new endeavor that they say accepts people as they are ? a reflection of changing views, particularly among younger Evangelicals, toward homosexuality and gay rights.

In interviews with the Monitor, two of Exodus?s leaders spoke of their own experiences with same-sex attraction, their abiding religious faith, and how they hope to find common ground in addressing social problems.

?Exodus has been a lightning rod ministry, and it?s been really one side of a debate, a raging debate, on issues related to sexuality,? says Chambers, speaking on the phone from his conference in Irvine, Calif.

?Our desire in the church is to be people of peace and to be known by our ability to be in relationship with and have conversations with all different types of people. And so we want to create opportunities and conferences and spaces where people can come together who have different opinions, and different worldviews, to talk about really complex issues.?

By ?church,? he says, he means the ?global? Christian church, not any particular denomination. His new, as-yet-unnamed, endeavor ?will be rooted in a desire to ?reduce fear,? he says. The website, still under construction, is ReduceFear.org.

Chambers hopes that people of faith, regardless of sexual orientation, can come together for the common good to combat social ills such as bullying. ?

"We?ve got to get to a different place in our culture than we are at today, certainly within the church,? he says. ?There are gay and lesbian people who are in the church, and there are people who have very different beliefs about that who are in the church.?

But he tries to steer clear of politics and has no position on same-sex marriage, saying it?s a ?distraction to the people we minister to.? ?

MANILA, Philippines ? Malaca?ang explained on Saturday, June 22, the P1.36 million in mobile phone expenses incurred last year by the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO), which were criticized by some quarters after it was mentioned in an audit report.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said over radio station dzRB that the amount was for 24 mobile phone subscriptions for a whole year, which means an average of P4,500 per phone per month. It's within the average monthly bill of many post-paid subscribers.

"If you notice, what we're talking about here is 24 mobile phone subscriptions in an office of roughly around 75 people. So if you divide the amount, the result will be P4,500 per month, or expenses that will come out per person," she said.

Valte added the communications office was "intended to be heavy" on its use of mobile phones and the Internet, both locally and internationally, as a result of foreign trips.

PCDSPO is under Secretary Ricky Carandang.

More importantly, Valte pointed out, the Commission on Audit (COA) report did not find the spending irregular, and in fact acknowledged that the PCDSPO was able to submit supporting documents.

"Let us please look at the COA observation ? which, by the way, was also included in the report that the office ? that the PCDSPO has sufficiently addressed [the questions]," Valte said.

According to Valte, the COA report said the PCDSPO submitted the necessary documents on internal policies for mobile phones, answering policy questions on their assignment and use.

"I think in this particular issue, what is worthy to note is that there is no notice of disallowance. It's stated in the report... We know that if COA issues notice of disallowance, it?s either the spending is irregular," she said.

Records showed that what's allocated for PCDSPO was P85,424 monthly for 34 postpaid mobile phone subscriptions issued to various officials and personnel. There were also 8 prepaid cards having a total monthly allocation of P3,200 for several drivers.

The COA said Internet downloads, "pasa" or credit sharing with other mobile phone users, and other expenses caused the PCDSPO to go over its postpaid and prepaid mobile phone service allocations by more than P200,000.

The audit noted that the PCDSPO did not have policies in place for issuing and using the postpaid and prepaid mobile phone card allowances in 2012, which could indicate lapses on the internal controls for mobile phone uses, thus leading to unnecessary expenses.

State auditors, Citing COA Circular No. 2012-003 dated Oct. 29, 2012, defined unnecessary expenditures as spending that was ?not essential or that which could be dispensed with without loss or damage to property.?

The auditors also said the PCDSPO management submitted guidelines for provisioning its communications services last February. This was to comply with the audit team?s recommendation to have policy guidelines regarding the release, use, and limitations of postpaid and prepaid mobile phone card allowances in order to keep future expenditures within budget. ? AOL launching their own Google Reader replacement, request an invite on June 24

Android Central

Another suitor enters the arena for the post-Google Reader world, Android app and third-party API included

AOL -- remember them? -- has quietly emerged as yet another potential Google Reader replacement, with the launching of AOL Reader. Launch is a pretty soft word to use at the moment as it's pretty much impossible to get in, though the folks at Engadget -- another AOL company -- say that invite requests will be accepted from June 24. Of particular interest is the news that AOL Reader will come at some point with an Android application, and that the API will be made available for third-party apps to hook into.

Medical care lags behind Afghan military growth

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SHINWAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? The young Afghan soldier lay in great pain on a cot at an army base, his uniform pants cut up to his thigh so medics could clean the wound in his right knee where he was shot fighting insurgents.

The medics bandaged him and gave him morphine and an IV bag of fluids. But they couldn't stitch up the wound or give further care because there's no medical doctor at the base in the eastern province of Nangarhar. The base's two-room medical facility is run by a dentist, and its nine medics have only basic medical training. The wounded soldier had to wait overnight in the clinic until it was safer to drive him about 50 kilometers (31 miles) to a more sophisticated medical facility in Jalalabad.

The Afghan National Army faces a shortage of doctors, even as the number of wounded soldiers soars during a fierce wave of Taliban attacks. While the U.S.-led military coalition has praised the Afghan security forces' rapid growth and improving skills, its military medical program hasn't kept pace.

The Afghan National Army has only 632 medical doctors ? 72 short of its goal ? to care for about 177,000 soldiers nationwide. At the same time, its clinics are having equipment, supply and logistical problems.

The result is bottlenecks at the field clinics, where wounded soldiers can wait hours or days to be transferred to a hospital. Such delays can increase the risk of medical problems and lengthen the time it takes to recover.

The Afghans also can no longer rely on the U.S. military's medical system as international forces reduce their presence in the country. The U.S. isn't giving the Afghans any medical equipment, and medical evacuations by American helicopters are limited. The withdrawal of U.S. combat troops is set to be complete by 2014.

More than 330 Afghan army soldiers have died so far this year, according to a tally by The Associated Press, though it's not clear what impact the doctor shortage had on their wounded because details on Afghan casualties could not be obtained through NATO or the International Security Assistance Force.

Last year, more than 1,200 Afghan soldiers died, compared to more than 550 in 2011, according to data compiled by the Washington-based Brookings Institution.

The medics at Forward Operating Base Shinwar in Nangarhar have gone through 7-week combat medical course, and they are often paid more than enlisted soldiers and know how to read and write. But beyond that, they often have little experience.

American medical adviser Sgt. Connor Quinn, who serves in the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, said he's working to encourage the Shinwar medics to treat their wounded before transporting them to the nearest medical facility. Quinn's Fort Campbell, Ky.-based unit advises the Afghan military on a variety of staff and operational issues.

"I've been trying to teach them what to do at the point of injury," such as stopping major bleeding or keeping airways open, said Quinn, 26, a U.S. Army combat medic from San Martin, Calif.

Most wounded soldiers from Shinwar are transferred to the brigade medical facility in Jalalabad because it's fairly close by ground, and calling for a helicopter from the army's fledgling fleet can often take more time than driving.

Afghan clinics also face problems with equipment, supplies and training.

At Camp Parsa, a large Afghan army base in Khost province in the east, the medical facility is clean and spacious. Afghan National Army Col. Shazad Gul, the officer in charge of the medical clinic at Parsa, is a pharmacist by training. He has a staff of physician assistants and medics, but what he really needs is medical doctors and surgeons for his 13-bed medical facility.

When the clinic sends up paperwork asking for more medical supplies from the ANA's warehouse, Gul complains that most of the time the medication requests aren't filled correctly or they are given expired or nearly expired medications.

American adviser Staff Sgt. Nathan Lethgo said the X-ray machine has been broken for more than three months, and he has been working to get the medical staff on the phone with the equipment technician to try and figure out the problem.

"We want to get them to learn how to sustain their own equipment," said Lethgo, a 29-year-old from Brentwood, Tenn., serving with the 1-61 Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division,

Meanwhile, Lethgo was trying to get two of the clinic's physician assistants in a medical trauma training course run by the coalition forces, but their paperwork was lost. He has to start the process over again, likely pushing back their training until later in the summer, during which the main fighting season in Afghanistan is under way and they'll be needed in the clinic.

The Afghan colonel shrugged and smiled, saying through a translator that these are "new Army problems."

A more sophisticated medical facility is located in the mountains in Gardez, but the roads are sometimes cut off in the winter months. The Afghan Air Force has fewer than 50 Mi-17 helicopters, and the fleet must balance the demands of evacuating casualties against moving troops and supplies.

"If they had more helicopters spread out, they could use them more," Lethgo said. He's hopeful that by the winter, the Afghan Air Force will have expanded its fleet.

Afghan soldiers are at risk every day, not only from the bullets, roadside bombs and vehicle wrecks, but also from their living conditions.

The Afghan soldiers have a lot of gastrointestinal issues, stomach problems and diarrhea, due to the conditions on their bases, said Quinn, the medical adviser at the Shinwar clinic. When trash sits out in the heat without being properly disposed, or when their water pump isn't working, the soldiers get sick, said Quinn. The ANA also regularly sends out medics to the smaller units to administer vaccinations for common diseases.

"Preventative medicine is a big push," said Quinn.

Quinn wants the Afghan medical staff to get regular training that will continue to build their confidence and skills. He was trying to arrange to have the ANA medics continue their training with ANA commandos after the advisers leave.

"They are good at taking care of casualties, and they know what right looks like," Quinn said. "Now it's time for them to walk on their own."

Kusserow's Corner: Tips on Interviewing Witnesses

At all times, interviewers must remember they are the ones asking questions and seeking information.? They are not the dispensers of information.? Because the purpose of the interview is part of an investigation,?interviewers should not reveal the status of the work, offer opinions, or indicate what has been found so far or said by others.? Always remember that the purpose of any interview is to establish facts.? A lot of opinions and conjecture may be offered by people, but only the facts are really needed.? It is common for those being interviewed to want to drift off of facts, especially if they are uncomfortable with the direction of the interview.

Conduct During Interview

The demeanor of the interviewer is important to the outcome of interview. If the interviewer appears quietly competent and professional, it will encourage confidence in the individual being interviewed. It also reduces nervousness in innocent parties and?increases nervousness in guilty ones.? The interviewer?s manner should always be polite but firm.? Cooperation is essential; intimidation is counter-productive and possibly disastrous in outcome. Under no circumstances should the interviewer show disrespect for the person being interviewed.

Stay Focused, But Adaptable

Avoid drifting away from the purpose of the interview.? However, at all times maintain an open mind to all information, and be prepared to develop it.? Always follow through on questions asked and do not be diverted by other comments.? Ensure that basic questions such as who, what, where, when, how, and why have been addressed.? It is advisable to avoid using terms that might evoke negative connotations.

Remain Professional

It is critical to always project a professional image.? This begins with dress.? An interview is a formal business meeting and the?interviewer should dress as such in a conservative suit; men should wear a tie.? Dressing down in jeans and a sports shirt does not project a professional image and doesn?t buy you much in building rapport and understanding.? The people to be interviewed are not your friends (or shouldn?t be) and therefore you should not dress and act as if they were.

Avoid Disclosing Statements of Others

Interviewers?should not volunteer the name of the complainant or another witness, unless it becomes necessary.? The general rule should be to not discuss statements made by others unless absolutely necessary, as it may affect the statements of the interviewee.? Even worse, the interviewee may simply agree to the same points as if it was independent testimony of his or her own.

Interviewers, the following are some tips in initiating interviews:

  • Identify yourself and any others participating in the interview.
  • Explain the purpose of the investigation.
  • Inform them why they are being interviewed.
  • Tell them it is their duty to provide complete and accurate facts.
  • Tell them your authority to conduct the inquiry.
  • Explain you are seeking cooperation and the interview is voluntary.
  • Establish rapport with the person to be interviewed.
  • Treat those interviewed with dignity, respect, and courtesy.
  • Make no threats.
  • Remind?subjects they should be candid and not fear retaliation.
  • Ask if they have any questions before the interview begins.
  • Keep control of the interview by asking, not answering questions.
  • Avoid use of any investigative jargon.
  • Note that subjects??comments will be kept confidential to the degree possible.
  • Request that?subjects also?keep the interview confidential (?street runs both ways?).
  • Offer no opinions relating to the investigation.
  • Don?t ask?subjects? opinion or conclusion on the case.
  • Take notes throughout the interview.
  • Keep the questions simple and direct, avoiding compound sentences.
  • Restate important questions in different ways to ensure correct answers.
  • Ask subjects if they know of others that might be able to add useful information.
  • At the interview?s conclusion, tell subjects they may be re-interviewed to clarify points.
  • Ask?subjects to contact you if they can think of anything not covered.

LONDON (AP) ? British police are investigating newspaper photos that show art collector Charles Saatchi grasping the throat of his wife, celebrity chef Nigella Lawson.

The pictures drew widespread condemnation after they were published by the Sunday People tabloid. The paper said the images were taken during an argument at a London restaurant on June 9.

London police said Monday they hadn't received a criminal complaint about the incident, and "inquiries are in hand to establish the facts" in order to assess whether a formal investigation is warranted.

Saatchi told the London Evening Standard newspaper that the photos misrepresented a "playful tiff."

Saatchi, an Evening Standard columnist, said "the pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place."

"About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella's neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasize my point," he was quoted as saying. "There was no grip, it was a playful tiff."

The 70-year-old Saatchi also told the paper the couple "had made up by the time we were home.

"The paparazzi were congregated outside our house after the story broke yesterday morning, so I told Nigella to take the kids off till the dust settled."

Lawson's spokesman, Mark Hutchinson, confirmed that she and her children had left the family home, but declined to comment further.

Saatchi and Lawson married in 2003 and live in London with Lawson's son and daughter from her marriage to journalist John Diamond, who died of cancer in 2001, and Saatchi's daughter from a previous marriage.

In Britain, a complaint from the victim isn't necessary to file assault charges if there is enough evidence from witnesses.

Lawson, 53, gained fame with her 1998 best-seller "How To Eat" and is one of Britain's best-known cookbook writers, as well as the host of foodie TV shows including "Nigella Bites" and ABC's cooking program "The Taste."

Saatchi, co-founder of the Saatchi & Saatchi ad agency, owns one of London's biggest private art galleries. He was the main patron of the Young British Artists movement of the 1990s, which made household names of artists including Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin.

Rep. Rogers: Al-Qaeda changing "communication tactics" following ...

TNW, and myself specifically, have been critical of the NSA?s telephonic and Internet data collection practices. It?s important to keep all perspectives in mind, of course, so I want to draw your attention to an op-ed by Rep. Mike Rogers, published in the Detroit Free Press.

In the article, Rep. Rogers defends the NSA?s activities, calls?Edward Snowden a felon, and states that?Al-Qaeda is changing its communication practices following the leaks. I?ll avoid providing commentary until after the Representative has had his say. Below are the key excerpts:

Neither program allows the NSA to read e-mails or listen to phone calls of American citizens. Both programs are constitutional and do not violate any American?s Fourth Amendment rights. Both are strictly overseen by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, a federal court created in 1978 to protect the rights of American citizens in the course of foreign intelligence gathering.

The first program allows the NSA to preserve a limited category of business records to help identify foreign terrorists and their plots to attack the U.S. This court-authorized program allows NSA to preserve only phone records such as the numbers dialed and the date, time and duration of calls. These records do not include the names or personal information of any American and do not include any content of calls.

The second program, known as PRISM, allows the NSA to obtain a court order to access the electronic communications of suspected foreign terrorists overseas. Because much of the world?s Internet traffic flows through U.S. infrastructure, the law allows the NSA to obtain the specific communications of foreign suspects from U.S. companies with a court order. This program does not create a ?back door? to any U.S. company?s server. This program cannot and does not monitor the communications of any U.S. citizens.

The effectiveness of these programs depends on them being kept secret from the foreign terrorists they target. It is much easier for terrorists to hide from us if they understand the sources and methods of our intelligence gathering. We have already seen al-Qaida begin to shift their communication tactics as a result of these leaks, and it will now be much harder for us to find them.

It?s interesting to note that PRISM, which sparked much of the current furor over data collection, and the phone metadata collecting practice which is now under legal challenge, are no longer the chief issues at the moment, regarding the NSA and privacy.

Other leaks detail wider NSA activity that collects information wholesale. Therefore, PRISM, as a more targeted program, is something of a canard in front of other NSA practices; to defend it and not address larger programs is to avoid the crux problem.

The AP reported recently a tract of information that details precisely the scale of the NSA?s data collection efforts, dating years into the past:

Despite that prohibition, shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush secretly authorized the NSA to plug into the fiber optic cables that enter and leave the United States, knowing it would give the government unprecedented, warrantless access to Americans? private conversations.

Tapping into those cables allows the NSA access to monitor emails, telephone calls, video chats, websites, bank transactions and more.

That specific revelation won?t come a shock to those better in the know about NSA activities. However, for the larger public, the scope of its work will certainly come as a surprise.

Here?s the nub of Rep. Roger?s argument: ?[T]hese narrowly targeted programs are legal, do not invade Americans? privacy rights, and are essential to detecting and disrupting future terrorist attacks.? In a very real way, there is a trade-off between privacy and security; we could allow for blanket surveillance and perhaps lower the incidence of terror-related activities, from sources foreign and domestic.

However, as a country, we?ve agreed to certain curbs and restrictions on the government?s ability to know what we are up to through both constitutional amendment, and the document?s implied right to privacy. We can change those elements of our laws and corpus documents. However, we owe it to ourselves to make those decisions in the open, as a society, and not by elected officials who fail to keep us in the loop on our own laws and regulations.

Boston rockers play fundraiser for bomb victims

    By Richard Valdmanis

BOSTON (Reuters) - A succession of all-star bands from Aerosmith to Jimmy Buffet rocked a packed house at Boston's TD Garden on Thursday night in a mostly raucous fund-raiser for the victims of last month's marathon bombing.

Tickets priced between $35 and $285 sold out fast at the 17,500-seat venue, with net proceeds to be donated to The One Fund, a reserve established by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick that has so far received more than $37 million in donations to compensate victims of the April 15 bombing.

The music kicked off with a Jimi Hendrix-style distortion guitar version of the U.S. national anthem by rock band Boston that drew cheering fans out of their seats before lead singer Tommy DeCarlo told the crowd "Tonight we are all Boston."

Another Massachusetts band, Extreme, transformed the energy with a sing-along version of "More Than Words" - an acoustic love song - before the homegrown J. Geils Band unleashed a torrent of fast-paced R&B as lead man Peter Wolf strutted the stage in black leather and shades.

"We came up here to help out Boston, but also because these are some great bands," said Shelly Watson, who drove up from Rhode Island with her husband to see the show, which also included comedians and a short speech by Victoria McGrath, a young girl who was injured in the bombing.

Other acts included country star Jason Aldean, who despite not being from Massachusetts admitted to being a fan of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, New Kids on the Block, James Taylor and Aerosmith - which made a round-the-world detour from Singapore to make the show.

Donnie Wahlberg from New Kids on the Block won the decibel award when he took the microphone and yelled the word Boston repeatedly, drawing enthusiastic shrieks from the audience.

"We came here tonight to show the world how resilient we are," he said.

Fellow band mate Joey McIntyre displayed the marathon medal he earned on the day of the explosion before the group broke into a run of songs including "I'll Be Loving You" and "Step By Step."

Aerosmith closed the show with a bang with lead man Steven Tyler sporting an ankle-length cape and leopard-pattern shirt dancing with his microphone stand while singing rousing versions of "Sweet Emotion" and "Living on the Edge."

"How heavy does your heart feel after a night like this?" he asked the cheering crowd.

Concert organizers have declined to say yet how much money the concert will raise for The One Fund, but have said bands and venue employees were working for free.

Three people were killed and 264 injured, many losing their legs, by homemade pressure-cooker bombs that exploded at the finish line of the world-renowned Boston Marathon on April 15.

Kenneth Feinberg, a lawyer who specializes in mediation, was tapped by Menino and Patrick to run The One Fund. Feinberg has warned victims to lower their expectations of how much money the fund would be able to pay individual beneficiaries.

Boston bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, an ethnic Chechen with roots in Russia's volatile northern Caucasus, was captured in a dramatic police manhunt days after the bombing. He was criminally charged and is being held in jail.

His brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was also identified by the FBI as a suspect but he was killed in a gunfight with police. U.S. security officials have said they believe the brothers had Islamic militant sympathies.
