Looking forward to this week’s Disrupt NY 2013, we used the CrunchBase dataset to surface regional trends in US angel funding. ?Not surprisingly, we found?relatively few metros with a substantial number of angel funded?companies and?the San Francisco Bay Area continues to be a formidable presence. ?But take a look at NYC (in red) – they’ve gone from 12% of the angel deals in 2008 to 20% in 2013. ?In fact, NYC appears to the only region with growing market share. What’s more surprising about NYC’s angel activity is that it is not reflected in its general share of venture rounds. ?When we looked at non-angel investments we found NYC’s share of activity to be relatively flat since 2008. ?It’s not clear to us what’s driving this, but we suspect others will have some good theories and that bring’s us to the data behind the graphs. The Financial Services Council has begun the search for a magic number - the level the tax rate on KiwiSaver would have to drop to, to create a level playing field with investment property.
The lobby group, which represents life insurers and fund managers, has been most vocal in recent years advocating for the age of eligibility for NZ Super to be raised from 65 in a bid to cut the future cost to our ageing society.
But the FSC's chief executive, Peter Neilson, a former Labour cabinet minister, believes there is nothing more it can do to influence the debate on lifting the eligibility age as the public now appears to accept it is inevitable, and that it is now up to the politicians.
Instead, the FSC has embarked on a project to identify the tax rates KiwiSaver funds should be paying to compete with debt-funded residential property investment.
Along with compulsion to save - which has its opponents - reducing the real effective tax rates on investments could spark a savings revolution, Neilson said.
Calculations by Treasury in 2010 showed the disparity in real effective tax rates for different forms of investing and debt-funded property was "tax preferred".
"In a PIE/KiwiSaver fund, the real effective tax rate is around 50 per cent," Neilson said.
By contrast, with a 33 per cent marginal tax rate, a taxpayer's effective tax rate on rental housing is around the 20 per cent mark. "That's what we are working on. We are looking for the right tax rates that would offset the advantages elsewhere," Neilson said. Research showed that long term, 90 per cent of retirement savings were derived from income on the 10 per cent of capital contributions made by the saver, he said.
So reducing tax rates on savings - something the Savings Working Group supported - offered big potential gains, though this would require politicians to accept it would be a wise use of tax revenue. The FSC hopes to be able to present its findings at a superannuation conference it is planning for late this year.
There's another area of work it is embarking on: how the low-paid and women can be given a fair deal should KiwiSaver be made compulsory, something the FSC's members would like to see.
Neilson said a barrier to the acceptability of compulsory saving into KiwiSaver, and the gradual lifting of the amount people save, may be politically acceptable only should some in society be exempted.
It may be that women on maternity leave need to have KiwiSaver payments made for them, perhaps at the minimum wage.
Neilson denies the FSC's lobbying positions are self-interested, designed to boost the incomes of the FSC's fund manager and insurer members.
He said there was no scope to cut the spending power of NZ Super because it is only just enough to keep people from poverty. The FSC was behind making NZ Super sustainable, but to be comfortable, a retired person really needs twice the income NZ Super provides.
Neilson said statistics indicating many Aucklanders would not end up owning their own home in retirement meant these people would need extra savings or find it very hard to get by.
CLOSER TIES, NOT MERGERS
The Financial Services Council's dreams of swallowing the three other major financial services industry bodies are over.
The grandly-renamed Financial Services Council (FSC) is the reincarnation of the old and largely ineffectual Investment Savings and Insurance Association (ISI).
In late 2011, its board planned for it to become much more. Driven by members who sold multiple products and found themselves paying to be members of multiple industry bodies, a plan was hatched for the ISI to absorb the others.
It was planned the new FSC would provide one voice for financial services firms and would have a budget big enough to carry out serious research and drive the political debate, for the benefit of New Zealand or the financial services community, depending on whom you asked.
Chief among the companies calling for change was Tower, which sold general insurance (requiring membership of the Insurance Council of New Zealand), health insurance (the Health Funds Association), and sold investments (the ISI).
But its issues ended after the sell-off of both its health insurance and its investment businesses.
The other bodies on the target list ? the Insurance Council, Bankers Association, Health Funds Association and the Financial Services Federation ? have all politely turned down the opportunity to merge into the FSC.
FSC chief executive Peter Neilson admitted he no longer expected to see legal mergers anytime soon, though closer ties were being fostered.
There are now regular quarterly meetings of the CEOs of the financial services industry bodies to develop issues of joint interest, he said.
The bodies had also devised a memorandum of understanding on how they will co-operate to develop more cohesion. That leaves the door open for mergers in the long run.

In March Google announced that they would be shutting down the popular Reader service come July, and soon after a number of services and apps announced that they would be stepping in to fill the void, or that they were already available to do such. One of our favorite iOS apps for Google Reader, the aptly named Reeder, was one of those apps, pledging to expand the available services from two to more than two.
While Reeder for iPhone has supported Google Reader and Fever for a while, an update to version 3.1 has added two new options: Feedbin and local RSS. For the unfamiliar, Feedbin is a $2/month (or $20/year) service that essentially duplicates the features of Google Reader, though its web interface is far better. Feeds fed into Reeder from Feedbin look and act exactly as they do from Google Reader, so if you're looking to make the switch there won't be much of a learning curve on your iPhone.
Reeder for iPhone 3.1 also now offers the ability to dive directly into RSS feeds. Essentially, RSS in Reeder is handled like another account, down to the ability to add individual feeds just as you would with Google Reader in Reeder. There's just one hitch in the RSS wagon: there's no syncing support right now. It is, as the app describes, "still a work in progress". Apart from the feed source updates, Reeder for iPhone 3.1 also adds support for pull-to-refresh.
Reeder for iPhone is still $2.99, while the 2.0 versions of Reeder for Mac and iPad are available for free until they get similar updates to enable non-Google account syncing.

What happened on Friday, April 12 and Monday, April 15 on gold and silver markets looked like a gigantic earthquake ? a drop of about $200 (13%) for the yellow and almost $5 (18%) for the silver metal. There has been a lot of hyperbole going on. We even heard it said that a move of that scale would statistically only be expected ?once every 4,776 years.? Going even further, John Kemp of Reuters calculates that, based on a normal distribution (by the way, market returns are not normally distributed), movements like this can be expected once in every 500 million trading days, or two million years. Sounds far-fetched?
There have been plenty of attempts to explain the cause of this enormous plunge. China's economy grew ?only? 7.7% in the first quarter, undershooting market expectations for an 8% expansion. China is the world?s second largest buyer of gold. There were concerns that the U.S. stimulus may be cut short since minutes of the Fed released just before the big decline in gold prices showed some officials were interested in ending the QE program this year. Another theory posits that since the new Japanese central bank governor promised to re-inflate the Japanese economy, Japanese government bonds (JGBs) have been on a wild ride. When investors in volatile assets are asked to put up wider margins they often sell assets they are holding. In this case, CME?s decision to raise margins for the entire precious metals sector is another bearish factor for the short term.
While what happened looks disastrous, we don?t think that this means the end of the great, secular bull market in precious metals. Bull markets have a parabolic stage when everyone is in a frenzy to get in and prices go up in a straight line. We have yet to see that spike.
Furthermore, we don?t see any changes in the fundamentals for gold and silver to make us think the bull market is over. There is still large unemployment, ballooning national debt, currency debasement and currency war, eurozone problems, QEs etc. etc. We like gold and silver for the same reasons we have liked them for the past decade.
The fundamentals are intact which ?forces? silver to rally in the long run but let us now turn to today?s technical portion to see whether recent events have marked the final bottom in the white metal or rather further declines are to be expected ? we?ll start with silver?s long term chart (charts courtesy of http://stockcharts.com).
We don?t see the same corrective price action as we saw for gold ? the yellow metal rallied for 7 out of last 8 days. Silver prices declined this week, except for a quite substantial move up on Thursday.
Overall, declines simply continue here (there was a small pullback within the 2008 decline as well); gold prices corrected quite a bit and silver did not. If this underperformance continues and gold prices move lower by $100 or so, the implication appears to be that silver will decline sharply to perhaps the $18 level or so. This price level is created by the July local bottom and the declining trend channel (parallel, green lines on the chart above), and the price level where the huge 2010 to 2011 rally began.
Let us now move on to the short-term timeframe.
Here, in the short-term SLV ETF chart, the underperformance of silver is very clearly visible. While there has been some sideways trading, prices have declined overall, and the lack of any real pullback indicates the overall weakness of this market at the present time.
Given Thursday?s close in the SLV ETF at $23.49 (silver at $24.30), we still see no significant change in silver?s performance ? its correction is still very small compared to the one seen in gold.
Since silver?s underperformance is such an important issue at this time, we decided to examine it particularly closely, using silver-to-gold ratio.
In today?s silver to gold ratio chart, we present a somewhat new view of this ratio. We?ve discussed the underperformance of silver for some time now so we felt this graphic would be useful. We believe it?s best to plot the rate-of-change indicator (ROC) on this ratio as it does a very good job at measuring sharpness of given moves. The solid line in the chart is the ratio itself with gold?s daily price in the background and represented by the gold line.
The key point here is this: major bottoms used to be preceded by a sharp drop in the silver to gold ratio. We used to see either capitulation of silver investors or artificial sell-offs before the declines were over. Regardless of what the reasons were, it?s something that used to happen before the bottom was truly in. Recently, however, we saw silver?s price decline, but not as sharp as expected relative to gold if a major bottom was forming. In the recent days, we have seen steady underperformance rather than a very sharp drop in the ratio. It looks on the chart like the trend is accelerating, though, sort of like a reversing parabola.
Ideally, we?d like to see a lower rate-of-change indicator, say -10 or -15 at least before stating that the final bottom is in. This indicator barely moved when the precious metals declined heavily earlier this month. The declines seen in 2008 and in the first 2 months of 2010 provide a good example of what the indicator can do. At first, metals declined but silver not as significantly as gold. Only when gold formed a major bottom, did the ratio decline sharply. We would like to see this confirmation also in case of the current decline.
Summing up, silver has been underperforming recently but not as extremely as we would expect during a major bottom. It seems therefore that the final bottom is still ahead of us. Thursday?s move to $24.30 doesn?t invalidate the above.

Yahoo said Amoroso will continue to serve on the board through the next shareholders meeting on June 25, but he will not seek reelection.
Maynard Webb, Jr. will serve as interim chairman of Yahoo's board.
In a statement, Amoroso said it was always his intention to serve as chairman for just one year.
Amoroso is the former CEO of Rovi corporation and led the investigation against former Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson after it was discovered Thompson listed a college degree on his resume that he didn't actually earn. Thompson eventually left Yahoo and the board hired Marissa Mayer to replace him.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Investigators believe one of two suspects charged in Canada with plotting to blow up a railroad track carrying passenger trains traveled to Iran within the past two years, U.S. law enforcement and national security officials said on Thursday.
Chiheb Esseghaier, a Tunisian-born doctoral student, traveled to Iran on a trip that was directly relevant to the investigation of the alleged plot, the officials said.
They declined to say precisely when Esseghaier, who appeared in court on Wednesday in Toronto, had traveled to Iran, whether he had gone there more than once, or whom he was in contact with while there.
When they announced the arrest of Esseghaier and his alleged co-conspirator, Raed Jaser, this week, Canadian police said the two men had received "direction and guidance" in the plot from "al Qaeda elements in Iran."
U.S. national security sources close to the investigation said that was a reference to a network of low- to middle-level al Qaeda fixers and "facilitators" based in the town of Zahedan, close to Iran's borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan, that moves money and fighters through Iran to support its activities in South Asia.
Canadian police say there is no sign of Iranian government involvement with the suspects.
Neither Canadian nor U.S. officials have said precisely what interactions they believe Esseghaier or his co-defendant engaged in with the alleged al Qaeda network in Iran. Canadian officials have disclosed only minimal details of the alleged Iran connection in public statements.
Esseghaier and Jaser were arrested on Monday after a joint Canada-U.S. investigation that started last year, based on a tip from a member of the Muslim community.
The pair are charged with plotting to derail a passenger train. U.S. officials said the suspects discussed blowing up a trestle on the railway line carrying daily Amtrak trains between Toronto and New York City shortly before the train was scheduled to pass over the track, thus derailing it.
Esseghaier, 30, has been a doctoral student since 2010 at the INRS institute near Montreal where he is researching the use of nanotechnology to detect cancer and other diseases. In his court appearance, he disputed the authority of Canadian law to judge him, saying the criminal code was not a holy book.
The lawyer for Jaser, 35, said he denied the charges against him and would fight them vigorously.
U.S. law enforcement and national security officials said U.S. and Canadian agencies were investigating whether the suspects had accomplices in the United States or Canada.
One official said there was "another shoe to drop" in the case. Canada's National Post newspaper reported on Thursday that the FBI was holding a third man in New York.
A spokesman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said his service was not granting interviews about the case. The FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
