PFT: Rams will not hire Rob Ryan

350x-1AP

The bounty case essentially is over, but bits and pieces of evidence continue to surface.

More than a few bits and pieces have come from the disclosure of a significant portion of the appeal hearing testimony from former Saints interim head coach and current linebackers coach Joe Vitt.

Among many other things, Vitt?s testimony before former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue sheds light on some of the contentious aspects of the relationship between the league office and the organization.? Vitt says that, at one point, Saints owner Tom Benson told NFL V.P. of security Jeff Miller to leave the premises.

?Jeff Miller took a plane ride from New York down to New Orleans, and the way he talked to our owner, what he said to our owner made me want to throw up, to the point where Mr. Benson kicked him off the property and didn?t let him back on the property,? Vitt said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

?This almost killed our owner.? Our owner has done nothing but be a great owner in the National Football League the whole time he?s been in the league. . . .? And now this guy takes a plane ride down and throws some documents in front of our owner?s face, and our owner has got to kick him out of the building?? That?s what we?re dealing with.? That?s fine.?

Vitt also explained that, even though notes generated by former Saints assistant Mike Cerullo indicated that Vitt had offered $5,000 to the alleged bounty on former Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, Miller didn?t believe it happened.

?The investigators, Jeff Miller in particular, acknowledged that I did not give any money to a bounty because he said to me, you know, we heard that your wife is so cheap that you have a hard time getting lunch money every day,? Vitt said.? ?That was his comment to me.? And I said, well, your wife must have a pretty good sense of humor, too, with the clothes you?re wearing right now.?

Vitt also had some strong comments for Cerullo.

?Mike Cerullo is a liar,? Vitt said. ?We?ll get some notes here from Mr. Cerullo. I?ll say this to you, Commissioner, and anybody that?s interested. I?m taking Mike Cerullo to court.? I?m going to sue his ass for the things he said about me, the things he said about this football team.? He?s going to be held accountable for everything he said. I make this offer again.? If we want me to take a lie detector test this afternoon, I will do so.? Or if you want me to do it tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon, I will do so. Mike Cerullo is a liar.? A liar.?

Vitt also talked at length regarding coach Sean Payton?s decision after the 2011 season to part ways with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.? Payton began to sour on Williams after the head coach caught Williams texting draft picks to the media during the 2011 selection process.

?I would say the final straw was the last two weeks of the season,? Vitt said.? ?Gregg kept coming to Sean every day and wanted his contract extension and wanted his extension done.? And Sean said, well, we?ll talk about it at the end of the season, well knowing what direction Sean was going in.? And the last week of the season, it?s all in the papers, you know, Gregg has gone to St. Louis, it?s his best friend Jeff Fisher, you know, ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom, trying to squeeze Sean, trying to squeeze Mickey to get his contract.? And the day after the playoff game that we lost against San Francisco, he went into Sean?s office and says I need to know right now, I need my contract, I?ve got to let Jeff know what I?m doing.? And Sean said, you?re not going to get a contract here.? I think it?s best go to St. Louis with your friend Jeff. And that was it. . . .? It didn?t end pretty. It didn?t end nice.?

There isn?t much nice or pretty about Vitt?s testimony, but it?s compelling and interesting and he has the kind of passion that typically is exhibited by a guy who has been accused of things he didn?t do.

J.C. Penney looks to sales to lure back shoppers

7 hrs.

J.C. Penney is bringing back sales.?

The struggling department store chain this week will begin adding back some of the hundreds of sales it ditched last year in hopes of luring shoppers who were turned off when the discounts disappeared, CEO Ron Johnson told The Associated Press.?

Penney also plans to add price tags or signs for more than half of its merchandise to show customers how much they're saving by shopping at the chain ? a strategy used by a few other retailers. For store-branded items such as Arizona, Penney will show comparison prices from competitors.?

The reversal comes on the eve of the one-year anniversary of its original vow to almost completely get rid of the sales that Americans covet but that cut into a store's profits. The idea was to offer everyday low prices that customers could count on rather than the nearly 600 fleeting discounts, coupons and sales it once offered.?

The bold plan has been closely watched by others in the retail industry, which commonly offers deep discounts to draw shoppers. But so far the experiment has served as a cautionary tale of how difficult it is to change shoppers' habits: Penney next month is expected to report its fourth consecutive quarter of big sales drops and net losses. After losing more than half of its value, Penney's stock is trading at about $19. And the company's credit ratings are in junk status.?

Johnson, who rolled out the pricing plan shortly after taking the top job in November 2011, told The Associated Press the latest moves are not a "deviation" from his strategy but rather an "evolution."?

"Our sales have gone backward a little more than we expected, but that doesn't change the vision or the strategy," said Johnson, who previously masterminded Apple Inc.'s retail stores and Target Corp.'s cheap chic fashion strategy. "We made changes and we learned an incredible amount. That is what's informing our tactics as we go forward."?

But critics say Johnson is backpedaling. Walter Loeb, a New York-based retail consultant, said Johnson "is now realizing that he has to be more promotional to attract shoppers."?

The pricing strategy has been a key part of Johnson's plan to reinvent Penney, which had failed to change with the times as its competitors updated their stores to make them cool places to shop. The plan includes adding hip new brands such as Joe Fresh and replacing racks of clothing with small shops-within-stores by 2015. But this isn't the first time the pricing strategy has been tweaked.?

When it was rolled out in February 2012, the plan entailed permanently slashing prices on everything in the store by 40 percent. Penney decided to have just 12 monthlong sales events on some merchandise. And there would be periodic clearance events throughout the year.?

But the new pricing plan wasn't well received on Wall Street or Main Street, so six months after launching it, Johnson ditched the monthlong sales, saying that they were too confusing to shoppers. Johnson said Penney has learned that people don't shop on a monthly basis, but rather they buy when they need something for say, back-to-school or during the winter holidays. And during those times, he said, they're looking for even more value.?

"I still believe that the customer knows the right price, but they want help," he said.?

Penney declined to say how many sales events it will offer going forward, citing competitive reasons. But the company said the figure will still be well below the nearly 600 it used to offer. The company said the discounts will vary depending on the sale. From Feb. 1 through Feb. 14, for instance, shoppers will get 20 percent off some jewelry for Valentine's Day. One example: half-carat diamond heart pendants on sale for $96, below Penny's everyday price of $120.?

Penney said the decision to add tags or signs on much of its merchandise that shows the "manufacturer's suggested retail price" alongside Penney's "everyday" price was a result of his realization that shoppers want a reference price to consider.?

National brands were also asking Penney to show the suggested price to shoppers, he said. Penney began showing the suggested manufacturer's price on Izod men's merchandise last fall and was encouraged by the response.?

Burt Flickinger, a retail consultant, said the move could help Penney because manufacturers' suggested retail prices can be as much as 40 percent higher than what retailers wind up charging. The practice is common in the home appliance industry but spotty in the department-store industry because stores generally hike prices up even more to give shoppers the illusion of a big discount, he said.?

"The strategy will be helpful for shoppers to understand lower prices," Flickinger said. "At the same time, it will be tough to get consumers back in the store from competitors."?

But Craig Johnson, another retail consultant, said that adding the suggested manufacturer's price is just a gimmick. "The objective of this exercise is to maximize the perceived value for the purchase."?

Johnson said that for Penney's own store brands like Arizona and Worthington, the team will research other stores and will submit supporting data to its legal team for approval before it advertises comparison prices, using certain criteria. For example, they'll make sure the fabric used is of the same quality as its rivals. For jewelry, Penney is using the International Gemological Institute, a third-party appraiser.?

"There are no makeup prices here," Johnson said. "It's all about trying to communicate what it's worth to the customer."?

Penney will not show comparison prices for merchandise that is part of exclusive partnerships with brands such as Nicole Miller and Mango, however. The company said it's difficult to offer such references.?

To promote the strategy, Penney on Wednesday will begin launching TV, print and digital ads. One TV ad compares a $9 polo shirt under its store brand Arizona with $19 "elsewhere." "Two polos, same color, same vibrant, same details, same swing, same swagger, different prices," the ad said.?

Johnson reiterated that he expects Penney to return to sales growth sometime in 2013. That would be a welcome change for Penney, which has had steep sales and profit losses since the new strategy was launched.?

For the first nine months of its current fiscal year, Penney lost $433 million, or $1.98 per share compared with a loss of $65 million, or 30 cents per share in the year-ago period. Total sales dropped 23.1 percent to $9.1 billion.?

Analysts expect Penney to post a loss of 17 cents on sales of $4.22 billion for the fourth quarter. They expect the company's annual sales to fall by 23 percent, or nearly $4 billion, to $13.3 billion for the latest year. Revenue at stores opened at least a year ? a measure of a retailer's health ? are expected to drop 25 percent, in line with the third quarter, according to analyst polled by research firm FactSet.?

Meanwhile, investors have sent shares down more than 55 percent from a peak of $43 in the days after the plan was rolled out in February. Shares slipped 18 cents to $19.17 on Monday.?

"A year ago, we were launching a major transformation and didn't know what to expect," he said. "Today, I know what happened. Our team has a year's worth of history. This is going to be a great year because the new JCP is coming to life for customers."?

Police summons opposition politicians

Col. Kiiza Besigye, one of those summoned by the police

The police have today summoned four activists of the For God and My Country pressure group to appear at the Special Investigations Unit.

Those summoned are MPs Muwanga Kivumbi and Mathius Mpuuga, Justice Forum president Asuman Basarirwa and FDC?s Ingrid Turinawe.

Also summoned is former FDC leader Dr. Kiza Besigye who is expected to report at the SIU for questioning on Sunday.

According to the police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Ibin Senkumbi the four face charges of managing an unlawful society.

Senkumbi says the group is required to explain their involvement in a planned city clean up exercise that has already been stopped by the police.

However, one of the summoned MPs Mathias Mpuuga says he has not received any summons from either the police or the Speaker of parliament.

Meanwhile

Traders along Kafumbe Mukasa road, one of the areas scheduled for clean-up, have appealed to police to block the exercise.

The angry traders are concerned that whenever politicians visit their area their businesses are affected and some even end up with injuries or being arrested.

They say they have learnt to appreciate their poor sanitary environment advising politicians to take the clean-up exercise elsewhere.

Insight: Evidence grows for narcolepsy link to GSK swine flu shot

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Emelie Olsson is plagued by hallucinations and nightmares. When she wakes up, she's often paralyzed, unable to breathe properly or call for help. During the day she can barely stay awake, and often misses school or having fun with friends. She is only 14, but at times she has wondered if her life is worth living.

Emelie is one of around 800 children in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe who developed narcolepsy, an incurable sleep disorder, after being immunized with the Pandemrix H1N1 swine flu vaccine made by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline in 2009.

Finland, Norway, Ireland and France have seen spikes in narcolepsy cases, too, and people familiar with the results of a soon-to-be-published study in Britain have told Reuters it will show a similar pattern in children there.

Their fate, coping with an illness that all but destroys normal life, is developing into what the health official who coordinated Sweden's vaccination campaign calls a "medical tragedy" that will demand rising scientific and medical attention.

Europe's drugs regulator has ruled Pandemrix should no longer be used in people aged under 20. The chief medical officer at GSK's vaccines division, Norman Begg, says his firm views the issue extremely seriously and is "absolutely committed to getting to the bottom of this", but adds there is not yet enough data or evidence to suggest a causal link.

Others - including Emmanuel Mignot, one of the world's leading experts on narcolepsy, who is being funded by GSK to investigate further - agree more research is needed but say the evidence is already clearly pointing in one direction.

"There's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that Pandemrix increased the occurrence of narcolepsy onset in children in some countries - and probably in most countries," says Mignot, a specialist in the sleep disorder at Stanford University in the United States.

30 MILLION RECEIVED PANDEMRIX

In total, the GSK shot was given to more than 30 million people in 47 countries during the 2009-2010 H1N1 swine flu pandemic. Because it contains an adjuvant, or booster, it was not used in the United States because drug regulators there are wary of adjuvanted vaccines.

GSK says 795 people across Europe have reported developing narcolepsy since the vaccine's use began in 2009.

Questions about how the narcolepsy cases are linked to Pandemrix, what the triggers and biological mechanisms might have been, and whether there might be a genetic susceptibility are currently the subject of deep scientific investigation.

But experts on all sides are wary. Rare adverse reactions can swiftly develop into "vaccine scares" that spiral out of proportion and cast what one of Europe's top flu experts calls a "long shadow" over public confidence in vaccines that control potential killers like measles and polio.

"No-one wants to be the next Wakefield," said Mignot, referring to the now discredited British doctor Andrew Wakefield who sparked a decades-long backlash against the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shot with false claims of links to autism.

With the narcolepsy studies, there is no suggestion that the findings are the work of one rogue doctor.

Independent teams of scientists have published peer-reviewed studies from Sweden, Finland and Ireland showing the risk of developing narcolepsy after the 2009-2010 immunization campaign was between seven and 13 times higher for children who had Pandemrix than for their unvaccinated peers.

"We really do want to get to the bottom of this. It's not in anyone's interests if there is a safety issue that needs to be addressed," said GSK's Begg.

LIFE CHANGED

Emelie's parents, Charles and Marie Olsson, say she was a top student who loved playing the piano, taking tennis lessons, creating art and having fun with friends. But her life started to change in early 2010, a few months after she had Pandemrix. In the spring of 2010, they noticed she was often tired, needing to sleep when she came home from school.

But it wasn't until May, when she began collapsing at school, that it became clear something serious was happening.

As well as the life-limiting bouts of daytime sleepiness, narcolepsy brings nightmares, hallucinations, sleep paralysis and episodes of cataplexy - when strong emotions trigger a sudden and dramatic loss of muscle strength.

In Emelie's case, having fun is the emotional trigger. "I can't laugh or joke about with my friends any more, because when I do I get cataplexies and collapse," she said in an interview at her home in the Swedish capital.

Narcolepsy is estimated to affect between 200 and 500 people per million and is a lifelong condition. It has no known cure and scientists don't really know what causes it. But they do know patients have a deficit of a brain neurotransmitter called orexin, also known as hypocretin, which regulates wakefulness.

Research has found that some people are born with a variant in a gene known as HLA that means they have low hypocretin, making them more susceptible to narcolepsy. Around 25 percent of Europeans are thought to have this genetic vulnerability.

When results of Emelie's hypocretin test came back in November last year, it showed she had 15 percent of the normal amount, typical of heavy narcolepsy with cataplexy.

The seriousness of her strange new illness has forced her to contemplate life far more than many other young teens: "In the beginning I didn't really want to live any more, but now I have learned to handle things better," she said.

TRIGGERS?

Scientists investigating these cases are looking in detail at Pandemrix's adjuvant, called AS03, for clues.

Some suggest AS03, or maybe its boosting effect, or even the H1N1 flu itself, may have triggered the onset of narcolepsy in those who have the susceptible HLA gene variant.

Angus Nicoll, a flu expert at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), says genes may well play a part, but don't tell the whole story.

"Yes, there's a genetic predisposition to this condition, but that alone cannot explain these cases," he said. "There was also something to do with receiving this specific vaccination. Whether it was the vaccine plus the genetic disposition alone or a third factor as well - like another infection - we simply do not know yet."

GSK is funding a study in Canada, where its adjuvanted vaccine Arepanrix, similar to Pandemrix, was used during the 2009-2010 pandemic. The study won't be completed until 2014, and some experts fear it may not shed much light since the vaccines were similar but not precisely the same.

It all leaves this investigation with far more questions than answers, and a lot more research ahead.

WAS IT WORTH IT?

In his glass-topped office building overlooking the Maria Magdalena church in Stockholm, Goran Stiernstedt, a doctor turned public health official, has spent many difficult hours going over what happened in his country during the swine flu pandemic, wondering if things should have been different.

"The big question is was it worth it? And retrospectively I have to say it was not," he told Reuters in an interview.

Being a wealthy country, Sweden was at the front of the queue for pandemic vaccines. It got Pandemrix from GSK almost as soon as it was available, and a nationwide campaign got uptake of the vaccine to 59 percent, meaning around 5 million people got the shot.

Stiernstedt, director for health and social care at the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, helped coordinate the vaccination campaign across Sweden's 21 regions.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the 2009-2010 pandemic killed 18,500 people, although a study last year said that total might be up to 15 times higher.

While estimates vary, Stiernstedt says Sweden's mass vaccination saved between 30 and 60 people from swine flu death. Yet since the pandemic ended, more than 200 cases of narcolepsy have been reported in Sweden.

With hindsight, this risk-benefit balance is unacceptable. "This is a medical tragedy," he said. "Hundreds of young people have had their lives almost destroyed."

PANDEMICS ARE EMERGENCIES

Yet the problem with risk-benefit analyses is that they often look radically different when the world is facing a pandemic with the potential to wipe out millions than they do when it has emerged relatively unscathed from one, like H1N1, which turned out to be much milder than first feared.

David Salisbury, the British government's director of immunization, says "therein lies the risk, and the difficulty, of working in public health" when a viral emergency hits.

"In the event of a severe pandemic, the risk of death is far higher than the risk of narcolepsy," he told Reuters. "If we spent longer developing and testing the vaccine on very large numbers of people and waited to see whether any of them developed narcolepsy, much of the population might be dead."

Pandemrix was authorized by European drug regulators using a so-called "mock-up procedure" that allows a vaccine to be authorized ahead of a possible pandemic using another flu strain. In Pandemrix's case, the substitute was H5N1 bird flu.

When the WHO declared a pandemic, GSK replaced the mock-up's strain with the pandemic-causing H1N1 strain to form Pandemrix.

GSK says the final H1N1 version was tested in trials involving around 3,600 patients, including children, adolescents, adults and the elderly, before it was rolled out.

The ECDC's Nicoll says early warning systems that give a more accurate analysis of a flu strain's threat are the best way to minimize risks of this kind of tragedy happening in future.

Salisbury agrees, and says progress towards a universal flu vaccine - one that wouldn't need last-minute changes made when a new strain emerged - would cuts risks further.

"Ideally, we would have a better vaccine that would work against all strains of influenza and we wouldn't need to worry about this ever again," he said. "But that's a long way off."

With scientists facing years of investigation and research, Emelie just wants to make the best of her life.

She reluctantly accepts that to do so, she needs a cocktail of drugs to try to control the narcolepsy symptoms. The stimulant Ritalin and the sleeping pill Sobril are prescribed for Emelie's daytime sleepiness and night terrors. Then there's Prozac to try to stabilize her and limit her cataplexies.

"That's one of the things that makes me feel most uncomfortable," she explains. "Before I got this condition I didn't take any pills, and now I have to take lots - maybe for the rest of my life. It's not good to take so many medicines, especially when you know they have side effects."

Governor Christie offers some words on online gaming in NJ ...

Governor Christie?s ?Ask the Governor? show on 101.5 FM radio Tuesday night featured a call from ?Joseph in Atlantic City? at the 44-minute mark.

?Joseph? wanted to know if Christie was prepared to sign the online gambling bill that passed the legislature in late December. Christie has until Feb. 4 ? the day after the Super Bowl in New Orleans (speaking of gambling) for him to sign or veto it.

Here?s my transcript of the response, as well as Christie?s comments on the state Department of Justice?s intervention Tuesday in the NFL et al?s sports betting lawsuit:

?Well, [the bill] is sitting on my desk. I?ve got to make a decision very soon.
I haven?t made a final decision yet, but here are the things ? two things that I?m concerned about.

The first is that I don?t know that it really will help Atlantic City. And I?m concerned that it may drive traffic away from Atlantic City ? that if people can gamble in their own homes on their laptops, why are they going to go to Atlantic City? And I think it?s contrary to what we?re trying to accomplish there.

Secondly, I?m also really concerned about setting up a whole new generation of addicted gamblers. You know, if you can sit on the edge on your bed on your laptop and gamble away the paycheck ? that?s a lot different than making the decision to go down to Atlantic City to gamble in a casino. So I?ve got those two concerns.

I haven?t made a final decisions yet, but I have those two concerns, and you should know that that?s the way I feel. And [there is] in part the reason that I vetoed the bill before, in addition to some ways that it was constructed that made no sense, either. So I?m taking a very close look at it. I was reading it over the weekend, and reading the briefing from my staff in depth, and I?m going to have to make a decision in the next couple of days.?

MY TAKE: In his 2011 veto, Christie had no interest in the part about subsidies for horse racing purses and he had qualms about the possibility of ?internet cafes? opening up all over the state. The new legislation removed the horse racing provision and addressed the latter. So the big issue may be what Christie previously called a ?legal fiction? of the Atlantic City constitutionally-approved monopoly on gambling in the state being preserved simply because the servers that record the gambling from all over the state would be based in Atlantic City.

So Christie ? a former U.S. Attorney ? may still be mulling that one, even with a Seton Hall constitutional law professor having given his stamp of approval to a state Assembly panel last year.

Christie does not seem to have strong pro- or anti-gambling sentiments. So he has a challenge here: personally, he doesn?t like this bill and doesn?t seem to think it will help at all.

But it has the backing of both the casinos themselves and the South Jersey lawmakers. Christie has repeatedly stressed a rebound for Atlantic City as being a core part of his first term in office.

Meanwhile, the state?s Council on Compulsive Gambling has taken no stance on the expanded gambling, instead seeking what they say would be additional funding needed. The bill does provide for those funds, though reasonable people can differ on how much is enough.

Will Christie ultimately decide he can best help the city by vetoing to his own reservations ? or by deferring to those who are most affected, and who have a different opinion?

I suspect, especially with these comments, that even Christie doesn?t have that answer just yet.

Save Your Money Mondays: Cutting Costs On Your Car Insurance ...

With this new year, comes the desire to cut costs anywhere we can. Did you know that with a few simple tips you can save money on your car insurance? Check out these ways you can save money on that all important car insurance bill.

1. Get a Variety of Quotes
When it comes to auto insurance, shop around for the best quote like you would shop around for that perfect dress. Find out what your needs are and jot down figures customer service representatives give you you. Do you need coverage that can help you during times of distress while on the road? Do you have children that need auto insurance? Do you live in a city in which lots of accidents happen? What kind of driver are you? Questions such as these are important to ask yourself as you shop around for a quote. Take the time to investigate several car insurance companies that claim that they can meet your needs. Put those companies to the test and let them give you a great quote!

2. Redeem Those Discounts!
When it comes to car insurance savings, it?s about getting the best rate even if it means getting a bit of help from a coupon or a discounted offer. Also take into consideration your status as a driver. Are you a safe driver? Have you been accident-free for a considerable amount of time? Are you a senior citizen but are able to drive well on the roads? Ask companies about their discounts for great driving records, college students and long time customers. You are entitled to discounts and sometimes all you have to do is ask for them!

3. Maintain a Good Driving Record
I know it can be difficult, but try to maintain an accident-free record with your insurance company. When precipitation hits, keep several car lengths behind the driver and pack patience in that car trip. Be a cautious and defensive driver, always looking out for the other driver. Car insurance companies often reward good driving habits with reductions in rates or lower initial rates.

4. Drop Unnecessary Coverage
When it comes to auto insurance, consider firming up what you use. Some types of coverage could be considered optional. You may not need layers of coverage since your child is no longer on your insurance or you are now living alone. So visit or call your state?s Department of Insurance or your insurance company to learn which insurance elements are required for your policy and just insure your car for the essential coverage you need.

5. Raise your Deductible
One of the easiest ways to see immediate savings could be changing your deductible, or the amount you agree to pay in the event of an accident before your insurer will contribute any money. If you increase your deductible from $200 to $500, you could potentially reduce your collision and comprehensive coverage cost by 15 to 30 percent.

6. Show Off That Title! Recently, I made the last payment on my SUV! I asked my lien holder if I could have my title expedited to me and she joyously told me ?yes?! So I now have the title to my car and boy do I feel free! Did you know that having the title to your car can potentially reduce your car insurance? Think about it. No one owes your car but you. Your car cannot be repossessed by a bank or anyone else! Insurance companies look favorably on that and could knock off some dollars on your car insurance bill!

Do you have additional ways you cut costs on your car insurance bill? Share them with us and watch related video below!

Jason Statham Talks Parker

Jason Statham as Parker Interview With Jason Statham On Parker

Jason Statham is typically known for playing the same kind of character in each film he does: a tough and rugged antihero who is more than capable of defending himself, and a man who serves out justice in a most exquisitely painful way. As a result, Statham?s latest movie Parker seems like the same kind of role for him, but this one stands out in a way many of his other films do not.

Directing it is Taylor Hackford, who previously made Ray, An Officer and a Gentleman and Dolores Claiborne, and Statham is surrounded by a very talented cast which includes Jennifer Lopez, Michael Chiklis, Nick Nolte, Wendell Pierce and Clifton Collins, Jr. While it may seem like your usual Jason Statham action movie, the pedigree behind Parker?is quite impressive.

Statham?s character in the film is a professional thief who is not the least bit remorseful about what he does, but he does have a set of rules he always follows: he never steals from those who are poor and he never hurts innocent people. The role is a perfect fit for Statham, who deals out a lot of the kick ass action his fans have come to expect, and it also shows how effective of an actor he can be.

We recently caught up with Statham at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California where the Parker press conference was taking place, and he was very excited to talk about the movie. He talked about what makes the character special, his favorite movies to watch while growing up and more.

Check it out below

We Got This Covered: How is the character of Parker different from the ones?you?ve?played before? What makes this character special to you?

Jason Statham: The good thing about Parker is? I played a thief before, I played a tough guy before, I played a lot of things that might have elements of what Parker has, but what makes this specifically different is that it comes from a great quality of writing. Donald Westlake wrote over 20 books about this guy and he?s a crook, he?s a criminal, he?s a thief, he does many bad things but for all right reasons. He has a redeemable quality in him and we?re forced to try to figure out what that is, but I think it?s to do with loyalty. He?doesn?t?steal from people who can afford it (laughs). Does that make him a good person? I don?t know. He?doesn?t?hurt people that don?t deserve it. There?s a moral side to him that is quite strong. At the end of the day I?m more attracted to the story of how it all unfolds.

We Got This Covered: What was the hardest thing about playing Parker for you? Was it the physical part or the emotional part?

Jason Statham: The physical aspect presents its difficulties and the emotional parts do too. They?re approached very differently. The physical stuff I?m? I feel that I?m very accomplished at that. I know what I?m doing I know how to navigate the sequences (laughs) pretty much pain free. I tend to try to rely on my experience with those things. For the drama I put all of that in the director?s hands, and we?re given good situations and I?m acting with good people so all of that kind of takes care of itself. You just have to be committed.

We Got This Covered: You do a lot of your own stunts in Parker as you have in other movies you?ve been in. What would you say was the toughest or most insane stunt that you did in?the film?

Jason Statham: Jumping out of the car?wasn?t?easy, hanging over the balcony?wasn?t?too pleasurable (laughs). All that stuff, that?s the popcorn fun of the cinema. If you can have a great story that people can follow the mystery and get the suspense, and then you have those moments of tension and a splash of visual fun, then you kind of get everything. You get your money?s worth.

We Got This Covered: Was it fun to put on the priest outfit?

Jason Statham: I looked ridiculous (laughs). I put that on and said ?thank God I?m bald!? It just?doesn?t?suit me. It was funny to see that stuff, it was very funny. I had on the glasses and a priest outfit, and we?d be at the state fair and there?s thousands and thousands of people there. I would be walking down there and I have the priest outfit on and the briefcase and they?re all ?hey Jason! How?s it going?? And I?m like ?really?!? People just recognized me and it was like one of those weird things. I was supposed to be in disguise! Must be the broken nose or someone must have heard me say something. Must be the accent. Good fun though, getting behind those costumes.

Algeria: Day 4 of hostage standoff

AIN AMENAS, Algeria (AP) ? Algerian security forces are facing day four of a standoff with an international band of Islamist extremists still holding foreign hostages at a remote gas plant.

At least 12 people, perhaps many more, died in a government attack on a convoy of militants Thursday whose outcome remained unclear by Saturday morning.

Hundreds of Algerian and foreign workers have been freed. But Algerian authorities have not said how many hostages remain in the main refinery of the Ain Amenas plant in southeast Algeria.

Freed hostages have described being used as human shields and strapped with explosive belts.

A Mauritanian website close to the militants says they are led by a militant from Niger and numbered about 40. Algeria's APS news agency says they are from several countries and number about 30.

Want a beautiful, healthy, and friendly pet bird? Look no further! Not to sound like an infomercial, well to sound like an infomercial, but that's not the point. The point is, we at Keely's Keet's Aviary, a small (or large depending on how you look at it) home breeding hobby, have fantastic pet budgies/parakeets up for adoption!?

We breed the little guys because they are just plain awesome.?

Almost all year long our budgies are doing the budgie and giving us more budgies so we can share the joy these pint sized parrots bring to any person or family. Our birds are hand fed so even the most stubborn natured bird is socialized and used to people, so they are easy to bond with and train! (Which makes the sweet natured birds no effort at all!) Our parakeets are given high quality seeds, vitamins, and fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Sometimes they even eat better then us humans do.?

Blue your favorite color? How about yellow? Can't decide? Get a blue bird with a yellow head! A type of bird we commonly get. From the odd albino to the common green and everything in between (ha, that rhymes) we have most colors and combos in the budgie kingdom. So if your favorite color is red, you're out of luck, parakeets don't come in shades of red! But we have red and orange leg bands! Which bring us to another fact about the best bird a twenty dollar bill can buy! We leg band all our birds so we know how old they are (to the day) and who their parents are. Banding helps in our breeding process but it also helps you identify your bird if you're traveling or your pet is lost or stolen.

To top if off, we have an awesome website with a bunch of information on our operation budgie and how to care for the little balls of feathers. www.keets.me, is the URL. Also we have all the basic starter supplies to get a new or returned bird owner on track! (All at good prices, so don't worry!) For more information or to set up an appointment to see the birds, give us a call at (480) 695-5359. We are around to show the birds most days after 2:00pm, we are in East Mesa, AZ. Pick up only, the birds don't like flying! (That's a joke.)

?

Highlights:

Hand fed.

Weaned to fresh fruits.

Guaranteed healthy.

Leg banded.

Beautiful and different varieties.

Only $20.

Males and females as young as 4-6 weeks of age.

Nokia releases 3Dprinting specs for making custom Lumia 820 back covers

One of the great things about Nokia phones from way back when was making it your own with swappable plastic. While that feature isn't available on most handsets these days -- instead we've got bumpers and cases -- Nokia added a removable shell to its Lumia 820 Windows Phone. You can go ahead and buy new ones, but if you've got access to a 3D printer, Nokia has just released a "3D-printing Development Kit" with all the documentation you'll need to create a custom backing for yourself. It's available for download from the source links below, and contains "3D templates, case specs, recommended materials and best practices."

African-American rescues lost tribal treasures

Courtesy of William Holland

African-American genealogist William Holland, dressed in traditional garb, shows off the ceremonial masks he bought on eBay. He plans to return the masks to the tribes from whence they came during a trip to Cameroon.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

When family researcher William Holland flies back to his ancestral homeland in Cameroon next week, he'll be bearing gifts: ceremonial masks that were taken out of Africa decades ago, purchased by Holland in online auctions, and now destined to be returned to the tribes from whence they came.

It's an unusual exercise in citizen diplomacy, but one that's fitting for Martin Luther King Jr. Day ? an occasion that celebrates the late civil-rights leader's legacy and encourages volunteer service.

"You're always supposed to give back," Holland said. "Even if you have nothing, at least try to give something to somebody so they can move ahead, even if it's something as simple as a book. Now I'm able to do what's right and return these items that were stolen. And I hope that it leads the way for other people to give back as well, whether it's to a school, or an organization, or to society."

'Roots' for the 21st century
Holland has spent more than a decade fleshing out his ancestral connections. He's used documents, DNA tests and extensive interviews to trace his family back through the slave era in the South, back to Cameroon in West Africa, and maybe even back to Syria in ancient times. He's learned how people from Cameroon's Oku clan were kidnapped by slave traders in the 1700s, rounded up and sent to America. Those were the people who passed down their genetic heritage to Holland.

Now he's giving back, thanks in part to eBay.

The Atlanta businessman's project began when he learned about a statue of Ngonsso, the founder of Cameroon's Nso dynasty, which was taken from the country in the early 1900s during the colonial era and ended up in a German museum. Cameroonian officials have been working for years to get the statue repatriated, and Holland was looking for ways to support the campaign. During his research, he and his contacts in Cameroon came across items of cultural interest that were coming up for sale on eBay auction sites.

"Throwing knives, caps, many things from the palaces are on sale here in the U.S.," Holland said.

Holland decided to spend his own money to buy some of those items, including the masks. "One has been identified as an Oku mask, the other is Nso," he said. The Nso mask, depicting a colorful elephant, was said to be used by a secret society in their ceremonies, while the humanlike Oku mask was worn during funerals.

The masks were apparently taken from Cameroon in the 1970s or 1980s under murky circumstances, Holland said. Now he's gotten both of them back, along with some Cameroonian throwing knives, at a cost of more than $1,000 (including shipping).

"I'm doing this on my own, because it's the right thing to do," Holland said. "This is hopefully a preface to the return of the Ngonnso statue. It's not fair that you sell something that's sacred to the community."

Holland also plans to bring a set of slave-era shackles he bought on eBay, to use them as a visual aid when he tells his distant Cameroonian relatives the American side of the story surrounding his ancestors' abduction. "I don't think many of them know what happened during that time," he said.

What's in it for him?
In addition to forging better relations with his presumed relatives, Holland hopes his eBay diplomacy will lead to a role in future development projects, such as U.S.-supported programs to upgrade Cameroon's water and sanitation facilities?and preserve the remains of a historic slave-trade port in Bimbia. He's also looking into starting a tour business that would be focused on his ancestral home in Oku country, with a twist of genetic genealogy added to the mix.

For Holland, this isn't just a business proposition. To paraphrase Martin Luther King, he has a dream: that the sons and daughters of former slaves will be able to work together with their African kin to make Africa ? and America?? a better place.?

"I'm glad that my eyes have been opened," Holland said. "I've learned a lot, and now I can do something to help change cultural awareness here in the U.S. and also in Cameroon. Now is a good time to do it."

Listen to Call Me Maybe After It's Been Put Through Google Translate Over and Over Again

Just like the French Price theme song, Call Me Maybe, the candy pop song that desperately wanted to be the song of 2012 but got hijacked by Gangnam Style, has been put through Google Translate over and over until it was translated back to English. Which means the lyrics have been chopped up into an entirely different, more hilarious beast. I like it better. More »

Healthmatters SUNBED SKIN CANCER RISK DOUBLE THAT OF ...

THE AVERAGE skin cancer risk from?sunbeds?is more than double that of spending the same length of time in the Mediterranean midday summer sun ? according to new research* from the University of Dundee and published today in theBritish Journal of Dermatology.

?The study tested levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from 400?sunbeds?in England and found that nine in ten of the?sunbedstested emitted UV radiation at levels above British and EU standards. The average strength of radiation was approaching twice the recommended limit.

The Cancer Research UK study also compared the skin cancer risk from using these?sunbeds?with the risk from the Mediterranean midday summer sun. The average skin cancer risk from the?sunbeds?tested was more than twice that of spending the same length of time in the Mediterranean midday summer sun, with one of the?sunbeds?producing a skin cancer risk six times higher than the sun.

Professor Harry Moseley, consultant medical physicist at University of Dundee and lead author, said: ?The development of high-power sunlamps, along with clear failures of the?sunbed?industry to regulate themselves effectively, is putting young people at an even greater risk of skin cancer than we previously thought.

?We hope that these findings will make people think twice before using?sunbeds?as you can?t be sure how much radiation you?re exposing yourself to when you try to top-up a tan. People need to be encouraged to take better care of their?skin, otherwise the cases of malignant melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, will continue to increase in England.?

Yinka?Ebo, senior health information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: ?It?s worrying to see that so many?sunbeds?in England are not meeting the safety standards. This strengthens our advice that using a?sunbed?just isn?t worth it.

?Research has already shown that using?sunbeds?for the first time before the age of 35 increases the risk of malignant melanoma by 87 per cent. They?re not going to do you any good ? the best case scenario is that they?ll age and damage your skin; the worst case scenario is a cancer diagnosis and potentially death.?

The strength of UV from?sunbeds?was found to be no different in those areas where the licensing of?sunbeds?is required compared to unlicensed areas.

The British and European standard** was introduced in 2003 and sets out a maximum level of UV radiation to be emitted by?sunbeds?used for cosmetic purposes. The findings suggest that there is much more work for local authorities to do to ensure that standards are being met by tanning businesses.

Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists explained: ?Product safety standards are there to protect the public and the government needs to step up its regulation of the industry.

?England is sadly trailing behind the rest of the UK in this matter. We need proper regulation, covering issues like safety of equipment and health warnings for clients and enforceable through inspections of premises.?
