Emails reveal special access White House gave to bin Laden moviemakers

Officials at the White House, Pentagon and CIA eagerly cooperated with movie producers who were expected to roll out a pre-election movie about the successful mission to kill Osama bin Laden, according to a cache of documents revealed by Judicial Watch.

?I know we don?t pick favorites but it makes sense to get behind a winning horse,? CIA spokeswoman Marie Harf wrote in a July 2011 email. The ?movie is going to be the first and the biggest. It?s got the most money behind it, and two Oscar winners on board,? she added.

Tom Fitton, president of the Judicial Watch public-interest law firm, said Tuesday that the documents ?provide more backing to the serious charge that the Obama administration played fast and loose with national security information to help Hollywood filmmakers.?

?These new documents show there is no doubt that Obama White House was intensely interested in this film that was set to portray President Obama as ?gutsy,?? he added.

The emails also provide new evidence that officials provided the filmmakers with privileged access to at least one of the participants in the May 2011 raid, and guided the design of the set to ensure it match the interior of bin Laden?s hideout in Abbottabad, near Pakistan?s largest military academy.

However, the efforts won?t yield the administration any major benefits: The resulting film?s released has been delayed to December, many weeks after the critical November election.

?Zero Dark Thirty? is produced by Kathryn Bigelow, who won an Academy Award for ?The Hurt Locker? ? a film about a rogue, alienated bomb-disposal expert in Iraq. The screenwriter, who accompanied Bigelow to meetings with national security officials, is Mark Boal.

A July 2011 email shows Harf informing her boss, Greg Little, that Boal and Bigelow would be ?meeting individually with ? the translator who was on the raid.?

Screenwriter Boal thanked Little for ?pulling for him? with the agency, and wrote his help made ?all the difference.?

Little?s response was effusive and included a smiley-face emoticon: ?I can?t tell you how excited we all are about the project ? PS ? I want you to know how good I?ve been not mentioning the premiere tickets. ?

The emails also show the CIA spokeswoman got an advance copy of an article by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd about the cooperation between the producers and the administration officials.

?This didn?t come from me ? and please delete after you read.? See, nothing to worry about!??wrote New York Times reporter Mark Mazzetti.

New types of Business Process Outsourcing services ...

When people talk about Business Process outsourcing, they would commonly think of call center services. After all this is one of the most often outsourced services that companies or business would utilize to augment their staff. However, what many may not be aware of is that BPOs can actually provide you with much more services that you could use to

Aside from the common telephony services that everyone seems to be familiar with about BPOs, you should know that they also offer the following types of services to their clients:

Computerization of documents:

One thing that is slowly getting wind throughout plenty of companies would be computerization of documents. For companies that had previously worked using a paper filled office, computerization can be quite tedious. The usual recourse would be to scan the document into various images.

The problem with this is that while you may be able to scan the documents into very images, it could be quite difficult for programs to process images and would not be able to read the text that was entered in it. This is where a BPO providing a computerization of documents service would come in.

They would be able to have people read the content of the images and then transcribe them to more computer friendly documents.

Research:

Another new type of business process outsource service would be second hand research. This means that a company would be able to find the data that you need for your reports, presentations, and other similar documents.

You would just have to provide them with the topic that you need some data on, and they would handle the research that you need. They would then send the data to you in various formats that you could easily use for your reports.

Aside from those mentioned above, there are still plenty of new services that BPOs can offer to your company. If you see something that you think your company would need, then maybe it would be high time to explore your Business Process outsourcing options. Who know? It may be the boost that your business would need in order to expand and grow.

Link between protein and aggressive, recurring prostate cancer discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In a study to decipher clues about how prostate cancer cells grow and become more aggressive, Johns Hopkins urologists have found that reduction of a specific protein is correlated with the aggressiveness of prostate cancer, acting as a red flag to indicate an increased risk of cancer recurrence.

Their findings are reported online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Aug. 27, 2012.

The team focused on a gene called SPARCL1, which appears to be critically important for cell migration during prostate development in the embryo and apparently becomes active again during cancer progression.Normally, both benign and malignant prostate cancer cells express high levels of SPARCL1, and reduce these levels when they want to migrate. The team correlated this reduction or "down regulation" of SPARCL1 with aggressiveness of prostate cancer.

"Our findings should allow physicians to not only pinpoint those patients whose cancers are destined to return after surgery, but could also reveal a potential new option for treatment," says Edward Schaeffer, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of urology, oncology and pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic.

In their study, Schaeffer and lead investigator Paula Hurley, Ph.D., also found that SPARCL1 seems to play a role in predicting tumor recurrence in a number of other diseases including bladder, breast, colon, rectum, tongue, lung, skin and ovarian cancers.

The team is now working to decipher the specific mechanism that controls the gene in hopes of

developing a treatment that can reset SPARCL1 to normal levels and potentially prevent a patient's cancer from recurring. Hurley is currently investigating novel genes that are not only prognostic of lethal prostate cancer but also contribute to prostate cancer progression to metastasis.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 240,000 men in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year; the majority are over age 65.The disease is the second leading cause of death among U.S. men. An estimated 28,000 men in the U.S. will die of prostate cancer this year.

"While many of our patients are initially cured with surgery, some inexplicably have their cancers return," says Schaeffer. "We are working to identify patients at higher risk of recurrence and our ultimate goal is to develop new treatments that would prevent the return of the cancer."

Funding for the study was provided by the U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program.Corresponding grant numbers are DOD-W81XWH-10-2-0056 and W81XWH-10-2-0046 PCRP Prostate Cancer Biorepository Network (PCBN).Additional support was provided by the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute YSCA, the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Fund at Johns Hopkins, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Careers Physician Scientist Award, the American Urological Association Astellas Research Star Award, and the National Institute of Health, with corresponding grant number P3-0CA006973.

In addition to Schaeffer and lead investigator Hurley, other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in this study were Luigi Marchionni, M.D.; Brian Simons, D.V.M.; Ashley Ross, M.D., Ph.D.; Sarah Peskoe, Sc.M.; Rebecca Miller, B.S.; Zhenhua Huang, Ph.D.; Bora Gurel, M.D.; Ben Park, M.D., Ph.D.; and Elizabeth Platz, Sc.D., M.P.H.Other investigators included Nicholas Erho, M.Sc.; Ismael Vergera, Ph.D.; Mercedeh Ghadessi, M.Sc.; and Elai Davicioni, Ph.D., at GenomeDx Biosciences Inc., in Vancouver, Canada; as well as Robert Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; and David Berman, M.D., at Queens University in Kingston, Canada.

PARIS (AP) ? French President Francois Hollande urged Syria's divided opposition on Monday to form a provisional government, promising that France would recognize it in hope of accelerating the departure of President Bashar Assad's regime as the violence escalates in the Arab country.

The French leader, clearly frustrated with reticence from China and Russia in crafting a tougher tack against Assad at the United Nations, staked out unprecedented terrain to jolt opposition leaders into unity - both anti-Assad fighters on the ground in Syria and exiles working abroad to end his reign.

Hollande's appeal to the opposition underscores a belief in many diplomatic circles that a credible alternative to Assad's regime must take shape first in order to expedite the Syrian leader's exit - an outcome that France, the U.S. and many other Western powers have sought for months.

Syria's opposition remains badly fragmented and it is far from clear whether such a provisional government could be formed anytime soon. But Hollande's statement, believed to be the first of its kind, appeared aimed to give an impetus to the creation of such a government in part because there is no international mandate for stronger action.

Many Western nations and Arab countries have called for Assad to leave power, but none has gone so far as to formally recognize the opposition.

"France asks the Syrian opposition to form a provisional government - inclusive and representative - that can become the legitimate representative of the new Syria," Hollande said in a speech to France's corps of ambassadors.

"We are including our Arab partners to accelerate this step," he said at the presidential palace, without elaborating. "France will recognize the provisional government of Syria once it is formed."

In Washington, American officials said the French call for a Syrian provisional government wasn't coordinated with anyone else, and that the U.S. wouldn't echo the statement anytime soon. The officials called it premature to speak about a provisional government when Syria's fractured opposition hasn't even agreed yet on a transition plan. The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Hollande has come under criticism over his Syria policy from France's conservative opposition ? notably by his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy ? who this month said France should take action as it did in the NATO-led campaign in Libya that helped oust Moammar Gadhafi. Sarkozy was French president during the first 14 months of the Syrian conflict and he did not call for military action without an international mandate either.

The conflict in Syria, which began as popular protests in March 2011 and has evolved into a civil war, is estimated by activists to have killed more than 20,000 people. Over the weekend, evidence mounted of mass killings by government forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya.

Echoing similar concerns expressed recently by President Barack Obama, Hollande said France remains "very vigilant ... to prevent the use of chemical weapons by the (Assad) regime."

Hollande said that any use of chemical weapons to repress Syria's people "would provide a legitimate reason for direct intervention by the international community."

But France sees no clear indication that Assad's forces are taking any steps to employ chemical weapons, a French official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

French officials noted a push for international military action in Syria could prove to be a dilemma for Obama, who is vastly popular in France and up for re-election this fall, because they feel that the U.S. public has little appetite for a new intervention in the Middle East after wars in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan.

France also has taken steps to support the creation of "free zones" for the protection of displaced people inside Syria - notably along the lines of a buffer zone idea floated by Turkey, Hollande said.

Russia and China have blocked U.N. sanctions against Syria by using their vetoes on the U.N. Security Council. Hollande took issue with that, saying Moscow's and Beijing's "attitude weakens our ability to carry out the mandate conferred on us by the U.N. charter."

Syria's opposition has been plagued by divisions and infighting since the start of the uprising last year, and forming a transitional government is fraught with difficulties.

Abdelbaset Sieda, the leader of main umbrella opposition group the Syrian National Council, said recently the group was planning and consulting for a transitional government. But several other opposition groups are known to be making similar plans, including a new opposition alliance headed by veteran opposition figure Haitham Maleh.

Tips And Tricks For Enhancing Your Home's Landscape

Do your neighbors discuss your garden? The important question is, is it good talk or bad talk? If that is the case, the piece that follows should help you make the changes necessary to stop the neighborhood chatter. Keep reading to discover how to beautify your garden.

To update your current landscape cut a new clean edge with soft curves. Curved borders create much more interest than the straight borders of the past. It doesn?t cost much to cut fresh edges, but it can make your lawn and your flower bed look a whole lot nicer.

Landscape design goes beyond plants and shrubs. Consider cement, wood or iron structures to add a little texture to your yard. Bird baths, arches, decks, and pergolas can enhance the visual interest and beauty of your landscape. These elements come in many different prices no matter your budget.

Watering your plants is certainly important, but it is only one component in maintaining a healthy yard. You must also consider proper soil, nutrients, natural insecticides and proper amounts of light when planning out your plant-care system. Fertilizer is a necessity, and so is choosing the right one! You must follow specific instructions for each type and what you?re using it for, remember this.

Consider fall colors when designing your landscape. Some people concentrate on spring and summer to provide color in their yard, but fall color is a beautiful addition to your landscape. You will see the positive outcome of this choice when your yard still looks fabulous in September or October.

By attending to some basic landscaping at your home, you can increase your home?s sale price if you are intending to do this soon. A bright green lawn or beautiful stone walkway can really impress a potential buyer.

It is not necessary to make sure you get every grass clipping off your lawn after mowing. This will supply some good nutrients to your lawn as the grass decomposes, and you will not have to add fertilizer to your lawn as much as you would have otherwise.

If privacy is your priority when planting trees, then look for fast-growing species. These trees will quickly offer expansive coverage. One popular fast-growing tress is the weeping cherry.

Always incorporate a wide range of shapes, sizes and plant types in any outdoor space. Your bigger plants can form centerpieces while the little ones can be arrayed around them. Low plants go in front with taller plants in the back. This technique can be visually striking if texture and color are used correctly.

Incorporate water in your plan. Small ponds, fountains and bird baths can easily be installed into your design. If you are able to afford one, a pond or waterfall is a great back or front yard addition. Water features can really draw the eye and provide a centerpiece to your project.

Most people haven?t considered buying landscaping materials online. You not only will find online shopping more convenient, but will discover more choices if you look online. You may be able to buy rarer plants that are not native to your area at online stores.

Consulting with a professional up front, before beginning your project, can save you time and money, even if you plan to do the work yourself. A short discussion about your ideas and approach with a pro can widen your perspective and uncover any issues in your design that need rethinking. If you are new to landscaping or are inexperienced, this expenditure may be of great help to you.

When mapping out your landscape, don?t forget to consider the effects certain plants can cause. It?s important to know how the roots of your plants and trees will grow so that they don?t harm pipes below the ground. It?s equally important to know how tall or wide plants will grow so they don?t block important views. Take these things into consideration when making your landscaping plans.

A solid plan created before you begin can save you money. Design a rough sketch of your landscape, this way you can figure out exactly what materials you need in certain areas. This will help you to avoid impulsive, wasted, and expensive purchases.

Use granite on the surfaces of outdoor kitchen equipment. Marble and other materials are cheap, but granite is heat-resistant and easy to maintain.

Landscaping isn?t just done by professionals. With hard work, a little bit of research, and doing the job correctly, your yard can look wonderful. Soon your yard will be the envy of all of your neighbors and you?ll be the resident landscaping expert on your street. That is something that every homeowner wants!

Hamas declines invite to Iran summit, citing Palestinian unity

GAZA (Reuters) - The Hamas Islamist government in Gaza said it had declined an invitation to a meeting of 120 developing nations in Tehran this week, heading off a potential confrontation with rival Palestinian leaders in the West Bank.

Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas's leader in Gaza, had accepted the invite over the weekend but backtracked on Sunday "in order that the participation would not be an introduction to deepening a Palestinian, Arab and Muslim division over the Palestinian cause," said spokesman Taher al-Nono.

Iran's call for Hamas to attend the annual Non-Aligned Movement conference had infuriated the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA), which sees itself as the sole legitimate representative of all Palestinians.

PA leader President Mahmoud Abbas has been at loggerheads with Hamas since his forces lost control of Gaza in a brief 2007 war with the Islamist movement. He has since governed only in the occupied West Bank.

Abbas had also accepted an invitation to the conference. But his aides had earlier mulled cancelling the trip if Haniyeh attended.

"We won't allow Palestinian representation to be ripped up - we won't allow anyone to do this," Abbas told a cheering crowd at a civic event in the West Bank capital of Ramallah earlier on Sunday.

"We are capable of looking after ourselves and our dignity, and we want unity and want to return to this unity," he added.

The Non-Aligned Movement conference, a grouping of developing nations founded during the Cold War, has emerged from obscurity with this year's summit - largely thanks to the fact that its revolving leadership has passed to Iran.

Iran hopes to earn diplomatic kudos by hosting the summit from August 29-31 at a time when the West is seeking to cripple its economy and isolate it diplomatically over its disputed nuclear program.

Israel and the United States have already exhorted U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to cancel his planned attendance because of Iran's involvement.

Egypt, last year's chair of the organization, will be represented by newly-elected president Mohamed Mursi. His Islamist affinity with Hamas along with rising militancy in the Sinai peninsula adjoining Israel has strained Egyptian-Israeli relations.

(AP) ? It was the $1 billion question Saturday: What does Apple Inc.'s victory in an epic patent dispute over its fiercest rival mean for the U.S. smartphone industry?

Analysts from Wall Street to Hong Kong debated whether a jury's decision that Samsung Electronics Co. ripped off Apple technology would help Apple corner the U.S. smartphone market over Android rivals, or amount to one more step in a protracted legal battle over smartphone technology.

Many analysts said the decision could spell danger for competitors who, like Samsung, use Google Inc.'s Android operating system to power their cellphones.

"I am sure this is going to put a damper on Android's growth," New York-based Isi Group analyst Brian Marshall said, "It hurts the franchise."

The Silicon Valley jury found that some of Samsung's products illegally copied features and designs exclusive to Apple's iPhone and iPad. The verdict was narrowly tailored to only Samsung, which sold more than 22 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed used its technology, including the "bounce-back" feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

But most other Apple competitors have used the Android system to produce similar technology, which could limit the features offered on all non-Apple phones, analysts said.

"The other makers are now scrambling" to find alternatives, said Rob Enderle, a leading technology analyst based in San Jose.

Seo Won-seok, a Seoul-based analyst at Korea Investment said that the popular zooming and bounce-back functions the jury said Samsung stole from Apple will be hard to replicate.

The companies could opt to pay Apple licensing fees for access to the technology or develop smarter technology to create similar features that don't violate the patent ? at a cost likely to be passed onto consumers.

Apple lawyers are planning to ask that the two dozen Samsung devices found to have infringed its patents be barred from the U.S. market. Most of those devices are "legacy" products with almost nonexistent new sales in the United States. Apple lawyers will also ask that the judge triple the damage award to $3 billion since the jury found Samsung "willfully" copied Apple's patents.

A loss to the Android-based market would represent a big hit for Google as well. Google relies on Android devices to drive mobile traffic to its search engine, which in turn generates increased advertising revenue. Android is becoming increasingly more important to Google's bottom line because Apple is phasing out reliance on Google services such as YouTube and mapping as built-in features on the iPhone and iPad.

Some experts cautioned that the decision might not be final, noting the California lawsuit is one of nine similar legal actions across the globe between the two leading smartphone makers.

Samsung has vowed to appeal the verdict all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that Apple's patents for such "obvious" things as rounded rectangle were wrongly granted. A Sept. 20 hearing is scheduled.

The $1 billion represents about 1.5 percent of Samsung's annual revenue. Jerome Schaufield, a technology professor at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute said the verdict wouldn't upend a multibillion-dollar global industry.

"Samsung is powerful," Schaufield said. "The company will regroup and go on."

Samsung engineers have already been designing around the disputed patent since last year.

"We should never count out Samsung's flexibility and nimbleness," said Mark Newman, a Hong Kong-based analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein. "This is merely an embarrassment and annoyance to the company that they will have to find ways around."

The dispute centers on Apple's dissatisfaction with Google's entry into the phone market when the search company released its Android operating system and announced any company could use it free of cost.

Google entered the market while its then-CEO Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board, infuriating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who considered Android to be a blatant rip-off of the iPhone's innovations. Apple filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011, engaging the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion.

The verdict didn't faze some iPhone users, who said that they already know Apple phones are superior.

The rivals are "modeling phones based on what they see with the iPhone," said David Green of Wareham, Mass., finishing a call on his iPhone while waiting to catch a train.

He switched to Apple from a BlackBerry about a year ago, after becoming disenchanted with the reliability and technological features of non-Apple smartphones.

"When I got the iPhone, it worked so well that I told my friends, 'Now I have a REAL smartphone,'" Green said.

Smart phone apps that help you dodge raindrops

iPhone and browser apps create weather reports tailored to you.

By Chris Gaylord,?Staff writer / August 23, 2012

The news calls for rain and those skies look pretty grim. Do you have time to run an errand without schlepping around an umbrella? Better check your phone.

The new smart-phone application Raindropping provides hyperpersonalized weather reports. The program uses GPS information to forecast the weather for your exact location.

Once Raindropping has pinpointed your position, it pulls up one of those familiar radar maps with colorful splotches representing clouds. But unlike TV weather reports, the app counts down the seconds, letting you know that it's, say, T minus seven minutes to rainfall and three hours until you're in the clear.

To keep its forecasts accurate, the software predicts only six hours into the future and reassesses the weather every 15 minutes. Even if you weren't expecting rain, an optional alert system can warn you if clouds head your way.

Raindropping works across the continental United States, southern Canada, northern Mexico, and several Caribbean islands.

The ad-supported software is free of charge for the iPhone and at Raindropping.com. An ad-free version costs 99 cents. The company promises an Android and standard-phone version soon.

While Raindropping tries to answer conundrums such as "should the caterers set up tables outside or indoors?" another hyperpersonalized weather service takes aim at road trips.

The Weather Channel's Trip Planner asks where you're headed and when you plan to hit the road. It then draws a full map of the trip, complete with icons representing the weather you'll hit along the way.

If snow or hail might impede your journey, the website lets you experiment with leaving a few hours earlier, departing on a different day, taking an alternate route, or stopping along the way. Trip Planner lets you forecast up to five days into the future, but even a few days stretches the bounds of accuracy. Really, it's best to use this tool as close to your departure as possible.

The Weather Channel also teamed up with review-clearinghouse Yelp.com to provide recommendations for hotels and restaurants at each planned stop. Once you've plotted your course, Trip Planner feeds all of this information into Google Maps for printable turn-by-turn directions.

(AP) ? Paul Ryan's mentors have included some of the biggest conservative names of recent decades, among them Jack Kemp and Bill Bennett.

Yet the ideological roots of Mitt Romney's vice presidential running mate, including his emphasis on individual responsibility and small government, sprouted from Ryan's small-town Wisconsin upbringing and a libertarian college professor. His outlook and career also have been nurtured by a devotee of supply-side economics who is now a top aide to another rising Republican star, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

Ryan put his philosophy on display in the fiscal blueprint he pushed through the House this year as chairman of the House Budget Committee. Democrats described it as harsh and made it a favorite campaign target long before Ryan joined Romney's ticket.

Ryan's plan reduces tax rates, slices deeply into benefits for the poor like Medicaid, reshapes Medicare and forces major cuts in basic government functions while boosting defense spending. He does it, in part, in the name of taming mammoth federal deficits, though critics note that his plan would leave sizable annual shortfalls for decades.

"Limited government also means effective government," his budget documents state, summarizing a Ryan tenet.

In a 2009 commencement address at his alma mater, Miami University of Ohio, Ryan said liberty requires economic as much as political freedom. He also said people should rely on themselves to achieve their potential and government should not erect hurdles for risk-taking entrepreneurs.

Ryan consults with a stable of conservative economists and scholars, including John Taylor, a Stanford University economist who has had posts in three GOP administrations. He has long praised the works of Ayn Rand, the Russian-born writer who strenuously championed an unfettered capitalism hinged to individual rights and responsibility, but in recent days has distanced himself from her, citing her atheism.

Ryan, 42, said this week that Kemp, the late Republican congressman from New York and exuberant champion of cutting taxes to spark economic growth, "was one of the most important mentors to me." Mirroring Kemp's ideals, Ryan's budget would pare income tax rates in what budget documents call "pro-growth tax reform."

Kemp was his party's vice presidential nominee in 1996, when he and presidential candidate Bob Dole lost to President Bill Clinton. In the 1970s and 1980s, Kemp was a conservative leader and one of Congress' most dynamic members, relentlessly advocating tax cuts that remain a hallmark GOP goal.

After an 18-year career in the House, Kemp was a leader of Empower America, a conservative advocacy organization he helped found in 1993. A year out of college, Ryan went to work there, writing speeches and doing research for Kemp and engaging in long policy discussions with him.

"I was struck that he was so young, and my dad had him working on policy," Judith Nolan, Kemp's daughter, who also worked there, said of Ryan. "He certainly put a lot of trust in him."

"He was primarily interested in economic policy," said Vin Weber, a former Minnesota congressman and the group's president. "We all thought he was one of the brightest young guys around there."

Ryan's relationship with Kemp lasted well after both men left the group. They spoke regularly, said Kemp's son Jimmy, who runs the Jack Kemp Foundation.

Jack Kemp, who died in 2009, let Ryan accompany him on his plane during the 1996 presidential campaign and campaigned for Ryan in his hometown of Janesville, Wis., two years later when Ryan was first elected to Congress, Jimmy Kemp said. Jack Kemp's granddaughter later interned in Ryan's congressional office.

Ryan's rhetorical style ? less confrontational than the norm in Congress these days ? often reflects Kemp's positive, optimistic speeches. Critics say Ryan ignores key aspects of Kemp's views, saying Kemp did not advocate winnowing government and tried to push his party to help minorities and the poor.

"Jack Kemp never talked about cutting spending, ever," said Bruce Bartlett, an economic adviser to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush who earlier worked for Kemp. "In fact, he was quite critical of Republicans who thought that was important. He used to call it 'deep root canal economics.'"

Like many who encountered Ryan, Bill Bennett, another Empower America founder, was struck by his curiosity.

Bennett ? education secretary under Reagan and drug czar for the first Bush presidency ? says he had frequent policy discussions with the youthful Ryan, who requested a reading list. Bennett says the items he suggested included the Bible, Shakespeare, the Constitution and Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn."

"He had a basic conservative view" upon arrival at Empower America, said Bennett, who said he still hikes with Ryan. "But it was untutored."

Ryan first worked in Washington in 1991 as a college intern for Sen. Robert Kasten, R-Wis. He caught the eye of a top Kasten aide, Cesar Conda, who offered Ryan a post on Kasten's staff after Ryan's 1992 graduation, his first full-time Washington job.

Like Kemp, Conda was an adherent of "supply-side economics" ? the notion that the best way to spur the economy was to let people keep more money by cutting taxes, not increasing federal spending.

"Paul would continually pop in and ask about what Kasten was working on or about this aspect of supply-side economics," said Conda, 51, who later worked for Vice President Dick Cheney and is now Rubio's chief of staff.

Conda gave Ryan two books that are classics among conservative economists: "The Way the World Works" by Jude Wanniski and "Wealth and Poverty" by George Gilder.

Conda played another pivotal role for Ryan. In 2007, Conda was an adviser to Romney's presidential campaign and introduced the two men in Washington. A scheduled 15-minute meeting lasted nearly an hour, Conda said.

"When Gov. Romney and I left, Romney said, 'I really liked him. He's very sharp,'" said Conda.

Family and friends say Ryan was raised by parents who admired Les Aspin, the local Democratic congressman, and Reagan.

After his three older siblings left home, a 16-year-old Ryan discovered his father, an attorney, dead of a heart attack. Ryan shouldered a pile of household responsibilities, helping care for a live-in ailing grandmother, getting a job at McDonald's and being elected class president, said his brother Tobin.

"Paul learned pretty early to pick himself up by his bootstraps and create something on his own," his brother said.

As a college junior at Miami of Ohio, Ryan studied macroeconomic theory under Professor Richard Hart, a libertarian. Hart says they spent hours discussing the virtues of small government, individual responsibility and free-market capitalism.

In that 2009 commencement speech, Ryan credited Hart for creating "a vision quest in my mind to improve the economy of our nation."

Even so, Hart says Ryan arrived at Miami "with these core conservative beliefs."

Stallone hopes time will heal pain of son's death

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Rocky" star Sylvester Stallone says he is trying to get back to living his life after the still unexplained death last month of his son Sage.

"It's tough. It's very tough ... it's a horrible situation," Stallone told ABC News in a television interview that aired on Tuesday on the "Good Morning America" program.

The actor, who put interviews and public appearances on hold after Sage's death a month ago, said support from good friends and family helped him deal with the loss.

"Time, hopefully, will heal, and you try to get through it, but it's just something. It's a reality of life," he said. "I think it's important to get back and start reliving your life. Otherwise, you can go into a spiral."

Sage Stallone, 36, was found dead in his Los Angeles home on July 13. The cause of death is awaiting toxicology results.

Sage, who played Stallone's screen son in the 1990 film "Rocky V", was the second of two sons the actor had with his first wife, Sasha Czack.

Stallone's latest film, "The Expendables 2", which reunites him with action stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Jean-Claude Van Damme, opens in U.S. movie theaters on Friday.

Hogs hit highways: Meet the Chinese Harley-Davidson fanatics ...

When Jim Rice and his Chinese friends traveled from Shanghai to eastern Mongolia and northern China in 2010, they stuck out like proverbial sore thumbs.

This was not because of Rice's American stature, but because of the gang's transportation -- three shiny, massive Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

?No one had seen motorcycles when we got there,? Rice laughs. ?We were like escaped zoo animals.?

H.O.G. explores China

California-native Rice is the head road captain for the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Shanghai Chapter.

The irony of the American culture in China is that people are willing to pay three times more for a bike.?That?s how much people love it.

-- Xu Youli (???), 38, member of?Harley Owners Group Shanghai Chapter

Having lived in Shanghai for 20 years, the 47-year-old CEO of a bakery supply company rides?a 420-kilo?Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra.

?My friends told me I needed a hobby; even my wife said I needed to get a hobby, so I did," says Rice. "I bought a motorcycle.?

Most owners in China ride Milwaukee's best-known product only for leisure.

?It?s so great to ride in China because of the beautiful freeways -- no one is on them,? says avid rider Xu Youli, 38 (???), who hails from San Francisco.

?It?s nice to be in the countryside where there isn?t any traffic.??

Xu, a manager of a bakery store in Shanghai, joined H.O.G. nearly two years ago.?

?I ride because I want to see and explore what the country is about,??added Xu, whose?Harley Sportster 883 is his pride and joy.

Harley-Davidson China -- inline 2Fifi Sa, the only female biker in the gang.

The housewife biker

Every Chinese H.O.G. member has a difference reason for indulging.

For Rice, it?s the mid-life crisis. For Fifi Sa (??), a Shanghainese housewife, it?s a gender-defying hobby.

?I don?t think riding a bike is a boy thing to do -- it is normal,? explains Sa,?the only woman who rides with H.O.G. Shanghai.

Sa, 31, says she started riding motorcycles at the age of 18 and she loved it from the very start.

She bought her first big bike, a Harley chopper, two years ago because she wanted to learn how to ride this specific type of vehicle. Now, the mother of a four-year-old boy?owns six bikes: a moped, a chopper, a touring bike, two toy bikes and a sidecar bike.?

You don?t see people tattooing Louis Vuitton or Rolex on them. [Harley-Davidson] is a brand people want to tattoo on their body.

--?Jimmy Tsung (???),?owner of the Harley Davidson dealership in Suzhou

Sa is trying to get more Chinese women involved by introducing riding and Harley-Davidson culture on China?s Twitter-like social media site, Weibo.

She recalls her favorite trip with her husband, Winston Sa, when they rode to Yunan Province and back.

?It was beautiful,? she says. ?The people and the culture were very different. I felt like I was in another country.?

Jim Rice recounts another member?s motivation of buying a bike: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

?Ye Jun and his wife were watching ?The Terminator.? Ye saw the motorcycle in the movie and told his wife he wanted one.

?She immediately told him a Harley Davidson dealership had opened. They went. He bought a bike,? recalls Rice.

Harley-Davidson?s network in China

Harley-Davidson China -- inline 1This is not Milwaukee. This is Anji Mountains, Zhejiang.

H.O.G. is a worldwide community for Harley Davidson owners to meet up and organize rides. Each of the 1,400 chapters in the world is sponsored by an authorized dealer.

The first China H.O.G. was established in Beijing in 2006. There are currently 10 other chapters in China's major cities including Chengdu, Dalian, Shanghai, Suzhou, Qingdao, and Wenzhou.

The Shanghai?s chapter, which started in 2008, has nearly 600 members, mainly Chinese. Membership continues to grow. The group?is expecting to draw 200 new members in 2012.

?I used to wake up [in Shanghai] and want to be in America, but I don?t get homesick anymore,? Rice says. ?Now, I have hundreds of friends all over China. I have more friends here than I do at home in the U.S.?

H.O.G Shanghai embarks on around 40 rides each year, including trips to nearby destinations like Moganshan, Tai Lake or Zhujiajiao as well as overseas rides in Europe and the United States. Members go Dutch on the expenses.

Last May, these intrepid riders traveled together to Austria. In September, they will ride in the United States. (With each trip abroad, they fly to their destination and then rent motorcycles.)

American culture on highway

Riding a Harley in China is?an expensive hobby.

Jimmy Tsung (???) is the owner of the Harley Davidson dealership in Suzhou. He says that he sells 10 motorcycles a month with the unit price ranging from RMB 93,000-RMB 460,000 (US$14,761-73,016).

Tsung, who ride a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide,?adds that people often throw in another RMB 50,000 to customize their bikes.

Then they have to buy the gear: helmet, leather pants and jacket. Add another RMB 30,000 or so.

And some of them have a more permanent mark.

Tsung says: ?You don?t see people tattooing Louis Vuitton or Rolex on them. [Harley-Davidson] is a brand people want to tattoo on their body.?

Another, but most important expense is a valid Chinese driver?s license -- RMB 70,000. The license is good for 11 years. After that -- bizarrely -- the bikes are scrapped.

Riders also need to check local traffic regulations before riding to another city in China.

According to the state-affiliated Society of Automotive Engineers of China, about 100 cities have motorcycle restrictions -- some to curb traffic or to regulate noise.

Despite all, the quintessential U.S. symbol is starting to find its roots in China.

?The irony of the American culture in China is that people are willing to pay three times more for a bike,? says American-Chinese biker Xu Youli. ?That?s how much people love it.?
