Power out, snowfall records smashed in Seattle (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? A historic snow and ice storm paralyzed Seattle on Thursday, shutting the airport and schools, causing car crashes, downing trees and cutting power to at least 90,000 households as blown-out transformers lit up the skies.

The National Weather Service declared an ice storm warning early on Thursday through noon local time for eight western Washington counties.

Record-setting daily snowfall of 6.8 inches was measured early Thursday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, shattering the previous record of 2.9 inches in 1954, said meteorologist Dan DePodwin on Accuweather.com.

As a result of the storm which arrived on Tuesday evening and was nicknamed "Snowmageddon," the airport remained closed with its three runways and ramps coated with ice.

"We're still not seeing departures at this point," airport spokesman Perry Cooper said.

The airport was stocked up on de-icing supplies, but "the best we can hope for is a warming situation," he said.

Streets were also a mess as frigid temperatures and freezing rain in the Tacoma area, 35 miles south of Seattle, coated roads with ice and played havoc with traffic.

In the greater Seattle area, downed trees blocked lanes on at least three state highways, Washington State Patrol spokeswoman Julie Startup told Reuters at 6:30 a.m. local time. She said there were many collisions on the icy roads.

Power outages kept residents in the dark but blown-out transformers put on a spectacular show.

"Skies just keep lighting up," Startup said.

Charles Tomala, spokesman at the Washington Emergency Operations Center, said that 24,000 residents in the Tacoma area were without power at 7 a.m. local time on Thursday.

An additional 70,000 people in southern King County, Thurston and Pierce counties were without power at 7:15 a.m. local time, Puget Sound Energy spokesman Roger Thompson said.

"Ice is really the big issue right now," Thompson said.

Puget Sound Energy warned that power outages in some areas may not be restored until Saturday.

Mark Clemens, a spokesman with the state's Emergency Operations Center, said Governor Christine Gregoire issued an unannounced "proclamation of emergency" late on Wednesday that would officially extend the hours that truck drivers could legally transport milk and other dairy products throughout the state.

Gregoire spokeswoman Karina Shagren, however, said she was unable to confirm that Gregoire had signed the proclamation.

State of Green Business Report Takes Temperature of E-Waste ...

? GreenBiz.com

GreenBiz.com has just released their 5th annual State of Green Business report and the news... well the news isn't necessarily good. You can bet you're in for a disappointing read when Joel Makower writes, "I?m not going to mince words: Things aren?t going as well as we?d hoped."

Oh noes. It can't be all bad, right? Well, when it comes to cleantech, there's a couple positive things that stand out for me in the report.

Home Energy Efficiency Becoming "Cool"
First, the report notes that so far home owners haven't exactly been keen on energy efficiency, but that's changing now that some cool new technologies are making their way to market.

"Cool technologies are starting to make home energy efficiency more compelling, such as a smart thermostat from Nest Labs, created by one of the designers of Apple?s iPod. Smartphone apps from companies as varied as ecobee and General Electric allow for near-real-time information about home energy use. Facebook joined forces with Opower and the Natural Resources Defense Council to allow members to benchmark their home energy use against a national database of millions of homes, as well as with their friends. Best Buy announced plans to start carrying home energy management tools, and Pike Research predicted that worldwide users of home energy management systems will reach 63 million by 2020, up from just over 1 million in 2011."

Indeed, readers really seemed to love the Nest thermostat -- and it was the topic of a long and enthusiastic conversation here at TreeHugger. Even the EVP of Corporate Strategy of Samsung mentioned it to me as a great new tech for energy-minded home owners during a tour of Samsung's energy efficiency products for the home. Speaking of CES, the connected home is definitely a theme in the consumer electronics industry and much of that revolves around energy savings. So perhaps it's just a matter of time now.

Taking E-Waste More Seriously
The second thing that stood out to me in the report is a note on e-waste. Sadly, the report states, "Collection and responsible disposal of recycling are improving, but today?s successes are still just a molehill compared to the mountain of e-waste to be addressed."

It is far from surprising. Just look at the tidal wave of new devices coming on to store shelves every day, and the relatively low awareness and action around electronics recycling. However, the silver lining noted in the report is that new legislation at the federal level could help improve recycling rates, and stricter legislation is simply logical:

"First, requiring domestic processing of electronic waste would be a boon for job creation. Second, by not reclaiming our own e-waste, we?re exporting rare and valuable materials?including the aptly named rare earth minerals?to China and other economic competitors. These materials are critical to next-generation technologies?including LED
lighting, hybrid and electric vehicle batteries, telecommunications gear, and medical innovations?and many US corporations are keen to keep such resources close at hand."

As the report notes, attempts to create federal strategies for e-waste regulation was stalled but this year may be the year when recommendations are finally taken seriously.

You can read the whole report -- and trust me, it's worth a full read -- over at GreenBiz.com.

Bankruptcy filing for 'Jerry Maguire' sports agent

Bankruptcy filing delayed for several years to try to pay off debts, says superstar agent Leigh Steinberg, who served as inspiration for movie 'Jerry Maguire.' But aggressive actions by creditors forced bankruptcy filing.

Sports agent Leigh Steinberg, who represented many of the NFL's biggest stars and was the inspiration for the movie "Jerry Maguire," has filed for?bankruptcy?protection.

Known as the first super agent, Steinberg said Wednesday that he takes responsibility for debts of several million dollars.

"I just lost track while I was in rehab," Steinberg told The Associated Press. He said he struggled with alcohol for years but has been sober since 2010.

His attorneys filed the Chapter 7 petition late Wednesday in federal?bankruptcy?court in Santa Ana, Calif.

The bankruptcy filing comes weeks after an Orange County Superior Court commissioner authorized but didn't issue a bench warrant for Steinberg after he failed to appear in court in a case involving a $1.4 million debt. Steinberg said his attorney agreed to change the date of a hearing, told him not to show up and then failed to reschedule.

Court documents show a default judgment ordered Steinberg to pay the Irvine Co. for office space he leased in Newport Beach.

The agent said his debts are larger than the $1.4 million owed to the Irvine Co., and that his attorneys are still compiling the total. He said his only assets are some stock.

Steinberg has represented NFL stars such as Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, Steve Young and Ben Roethlisberger. He was the inspiration for Tom Cruise's character in 1996's "Jerry Maguire." The movie turned "Show me the money!" into an enduring catchphrase.

Steinberg issued a statement shortly after the filing.

He said he delayed filing for?bankruptcy?for several years "because of my moral and legal obligation to people who advanced me funds or performed services in good faith. But the constant and aggressive collection efforts and press initiatives undertaken by creditors have harassed my family and prevented me from working to be able to pay these debts."

Wi-Spi Helicopter and Intruder RC toys put the childlike wonder back into spying on your neighbors

Sick and tired of spying on the neighbors the old-fashioned way? Good news, all. Interactive Toy Designs showed off two new products in its not-so-subtly named Wi-Spi line of remote control vehicles. Really driving the notion home is the Intruder, the name given to the little red sports car. The helicopter, on the other hand, is called just that, though we're sure you can intrude upon people with the thing, if you really put your mind to it. Both vehicles have built-in cameras that beam live feeds to your iPhone or Android devices. You can also record the video and upload it instantly to social networking sites, to really get that spying 2.0 feel. The Intruder and Helicopter are both arriving in the fall, for $100 and $120, respectively.

Czechs discover world's fourth longest underwater cave in Mexico

?TK |

10 January 2012

Brno, Jan 9 (CTK) - Members of the Czech Speleological Society (CSS) discovered the world's fourth longest underwater cave, Ko'ox Baal, which is over 56.5 kilometres long, in Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico these days, Daniel Hutnan, one of the speleologists, told CTK yesterday.

Czechs and Slovaks have been exploring the Yucatan underground since 2003, looking for new underground spaces in cenotes, or underwater caves.

The Quintana Roo Speleological Survey has included the new discovery in the list of the longest cave system in the world, it says on its web page.

The Ko'ox Baal system was 36.7 kilometres long. However, its connection, Tux Kupaxa, a smaller, some 20-km-long system, was found last December. Tux Kupaxa became part of Ko'ox Baal then.

The exploration in the cave system continues. It may result in Ko'ox Baal becoming even the world's third longest underwater cave since the Xunaan Ha system, which is over 51 kilometres long is situated some two kilometres from Ko'ox Baal.

If a connection between them is uncovered, it would also become part of Ko'ox Baal. The whole system would be almost 110 kilometres long then.

Moreover, Ko'ox Baal is now the longest underwater cave system that is mapped as well.

"We never abandon any of the newly discovered caves before completing its map. Unfortunately this is an exception in Yucatan," Hutnan said.

Czech speleologists' work helps reveal the mysteries of the prehistoric era. They have found bones of prehistoric animals, extinct long time ago, in the underwater caves. One of them is a rare skeleton of an unknown sloth species.

Czech and Slovak speleologists will present their successes in Mexico at the 16th International Speleological Congress to be held in Brno next year.

The event took place in the then Czechoslovakia only once. It was in Olomouc, north Moravia, in 1973.

Samsung's WiFi-enabled cameras hands-on

While scouring Samsung's booth at CES's Digital Experience for that glorious 55-inch OLED set this evening, we came across a table full of new WiFi-enabled cameras and a camcorder. The logic behind the WiFi feature is that it enables direct access to Microsoft's Sky Drive, E-Mail, PC Auto Backup, remote viewfinding and of course Facebook, Youtube, and Picasa right from your phone. The top of the line $379 WB850F -- the F designation indicates it has WiFi -- has a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 21x optical zoom, 3-inch AMOLED display, shoots 1080p HD, and even has GPS with POI. The 16 megapixel $199 DV300F was also on hand with a 5x optical zoom, a 3-inch display and shoots 720p video. Samsung's 14 megapixel $229 WB15F also sports a 3-inch AMOLED screen, and shoots in full HD with up to 18x optical zoom. The tied-for-least-expensive $199 ST200F still puts in a showing with a 16 megapixel shooter, 10x optical zoom while still capturing HD video at 720p. Samsung launched one HD camcorder, the $299 Q20 which packs 20x optical zoom, time lapse, and HD recording at 1080i @ 60fps. All of the cameras have a similar heft and are built with similar materials which should help narrow people's purchase decisions to looking at what features they want and what's affordable. On to the gallery!

Improving economy: More jobs, higher pump prices (AP)

NEW YORK ? As the U.S. economy recovers and adds more jobs, Americans are paying the price at the gas pump.

The government said Friday that the nation's unemployment rate dropped to 8.5 percent, the same day that gasoline prices hit an average of $3.35 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year.

Gasoline prices are rising again after falling in the last months of 2011. Motorists are buying less gas than they did a year ago, but pump prices are rising with higher oil prices.

"It's difficult to raise prices when gasoline demand is so anemic," said Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service. But if the cost of oil goes up, "you have to pass it along" to the consumer, he said.

Kloza expects pump prices will average between $3.75 and $4.25 a gallon this year. They could be around $4 a gallon by spring.

Oil prices started 2012 on the rise, continuing a trend from last year. The price of benchmark U.S. crude rose 19 percent in 2011 to an average of about $95 a barrel.

The price of benchmark crude rose 3 percent this week, though it was down slightly on Friday. The positive U.S. jobs numbers and weak economic data in Europe boosted the dollar against other major currencies, including the euro. Oil is priced in dollars, and it tends to fall as the dollar rises and makes crude more expensive for investors holding foreign money.

Benchmark crude fell 25 cents to end the week at $101.56 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oil varieties that are imported by U.S. refineries, rose 32 cents to finish at $113.06 per barrel in London.

Oil prices jumped above $100 a barrel this week on growing tension in the Persian Gulf. Iran has threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, if the U.S. and other nations enforce more economic sanctions against Iran because of its nuclear program. The strait provides the only way out of the Persian Gulf for oil tankers carrying one-sixth of the world's exports. Experts say it's unlikely that Iran could follow through with its threat, but fears of military action could slow shipments at a time when global demand is higher than ever.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose by 3 cents to finish at $3.07 per gallon and gasoline futures rose by 2 cents to end at $2.75 per gallon. Natural gas rose by 8 cents to finish at $3.06 per 1,000 cubic feet.
